The announcement of the Garage 56 program took NASCAR fans by surprise. The move saw NASCAR joining hands with Hendrick Motorsports, Chevrolet, and Goodyear to participate in 24 hours of Le Mans 2023. There was even more excitement in store for fans when it was confirmed that seven-time Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson will be one of the drivers for the race.
2009 F1 winner Jenson Button and former Le Mans winner Mike Rockenfeller will join Jimmie at Garage 56. With highly successful entities from across the world of motorsports coming together, Garage 56 is considered to be a massive project. It focuses on testing new technologies without competing for any overall wins. But is it just the technology that is being tested here? Or is there an agenda behind this participation?

To this, Jimmie said, “Yeah, I truly feel like a certain level of performance going the distance. Umm, I do feel like with the pace that we have seen, we’ll be in the mix with the GT cars which I think will impress me.”
He added, “But I think the ultimate goal is to make the entire 24 hours clean, and safe, no issues and to really show that we have been able to go around the clock with the rest of the field.”
Furthermore, Jimmie had recently expressed his excitement about working with Jenson Button for the Le Man entry. He was even seen suggesting that he would want Button to join the Legacy Motor Club garage. It will be interesting to see how the two motorsports icons fare in the race.
Chad Knaus has his say on the project
Dale Jr was quite insistent on getting to the real motive behind this Garage 56 program. In fact, he approached Chad Knaus seeking the answer. The 51-year-old enthusiastically said, “We want to try to really showcase what NASCAR cars are capable of doing and put that out there in front of the world to see it. I think we have a reputation for being a non-technical sport. And F1 is highly technical which it is, we all understand that.
