The ‘King of Clay’, Rafael Nadal holding 11 titles and the next is Bjorn Borg who holds six titles. The Swiss great, Roger Federer had a tough against the Spaniard. However, in this era, Federer happens to be the second best player on clay despite having just one Roland Garros title. He might make a comeback and the become a threat to Nadal. Federer will decide before the end of this season.
“The clay-court season is under review,” Federer said. “It’s not off the table. I will know by the end of the year. I would like to make up my mind ahead of time so I can plan my buildup, my fitness schedule, even the way I would approach my December practice sessions. It could benefit the clay-court season. And if Federer would have played Borg, was it possible for the Swiss to outdo the Swede? The Spaniard had an answer to this question.
“We cannot compare eras now,” Nadal said. “Bjorn Borg has been an unbelievable dominant player for a long time. What he did was amazing, on clay, on grass, everywhere. So he’s a great champion. Roger Federer is an amazing champion, too. He’s a fantastic clay‑court player. A player who was able to play 2006, 2007, 2008, finals, then winning 2009, and then playing the final again in 2011. The semi-finals in 2005. I don’t see a lot of players that have been in all that final rounds of French Open in a row, so that says that Roger is one of the best clay‑court players of the history probably.”
Nadal also shares his views on the upcoming generation of tennis. “No, I don’t see myself there. Different characters, different ways to understand the sport, so is a new era. The new era is new players are good for sport are good for fans. The ball goes quicker now than before. I don’t know if that’s good for the fans or not,” Nadal shared.
