Rafael Nadal was forced to retire in the fifth set of the Australian open quarterfinals, citing a knee injury. Nothing taken away from Marin Cilic though who played some of his best tennis in the most crucial moments of the match, He forced Nadal to change his tactics every now and then. The Spaniard, however was left on the verge of tears as he walked off the court. Later in the press conference, an update was provided of the Rafael Nadal injury. He revealed that he would undergo a MRI scan, and only then would he decide on the severity of his injury. Nadal also slammed the tournaments for a grueling schedule round the year. He said that injuries have hit him more than any of the  other top ten players, and that he reminisces the number of tournaments he has had to skip because of injuries. Soon after the scan, Nadal released a public statement on his social media accounts, saying that there would be no changes in his calendar schedule.

“After the painful withdrawal last night at the Australian Open, today I had an MRI here in Melbourne,” Nadal posted on social media. “The results say that I suffer from a Grade 1 injury to the [sic] Psoas Iliac on my right leg.

“As bad as it is to have to retire from the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament, the injury is not so serious. In the next few days I will be in sports rest and perform anti-inflammatory physiotherapy.

“The doctors tell me that in two weeks I will be able to get back on court, progressively resuming my workouts. The normal recovery time is around three weeks so in principle that does not change anything in my calendar and I will play in Acapulco, Indian Wells and Miami.”

The Nadal injury won’t put him out for long as he looks to make his return next month in Mexico where he captured two titles.
