The Red Sox made a big splash! But not everyone in the clubhouse is celebrating. Yes, you guessed that right! We are talking about Vaughn Grissom. For him, this move could be a game-changer—and not in a good way. Once seen as Boston’s second baseman of the future, Grissom now faces uncertain times with his position under threat.
Grissom’s entry in Boston was in December 2023 in a high-profile trade. As the Red Sox sent veteran left-hander Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves, the front office was optimistic that they had acquired an infielder with a knack for offense. However, during the debut season, Grissom faced a series of setbacks.
He suffered a groin strain during spring training followed by an illness in April and a hamstring injury in May forcing him to spend time off the field. Vaughn Grissom faced challenges achieving just a .148 batting average with a .367 OPS, across 23 matches. The once-promising acquisition suddenly looked like a liability.

In an interview, with MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, Grissom spoke candorly about the reality of his situation. “I kind of know where I’m at, just trying to stay alive as long as possible. That’s one of the ways to have a backup plan.” His words reflected the harsh reality of baseball’s revolving door where promising talents can quickly find themselves on the outside looking in.

Now, with Bregman taking over at third base, the infield alignment shifts. Rafael Devers could be shifted to second, pushing Grissom further down the depth chart. David Hamilton and prospect Kristian Campbell also factor into the second base equation, leaving Grissom without a clear role.It is clear that the Red Sox are eager to make a comeback and have made moves like adding Bregman, a player with an impressive .870 OPS. To avoid their season’s setbacks, the right-handed hitter will even out their predominantly left-handed lineup.
But for Grissom, the move signaled uncertainty.

What’s next for Grissom? Trade or depth option?
With Alex Bregman’s arrival, Vaughn Grissom’s time in Boston may already be running out as his path to regular playing time is blocked. The team may keep him as a utility infielder despite his batting woes, but this choice comes with risks. So, exploring a trade could be beneficial for both sides now.
Various teams seeking infield reinforcements, like the Chicago White Sox, Miami Marlins, or Detroit Tigers might consider acquiring Grissom in hopes of a resurgence. Considering his achievements with Atlanta there is potential for growth for the 24-year-old if a team offers him regular opportunities to play.
Nonetheless one can’t forget, that Grissom’s trade value isn’t what it once was. His injury-plagued 2024 season and lackluster offensive numbers have diminished his stock. If the Red Sox do move him, it will likely be in a minor deal rather than the impactful trade they had envisioned when they acquired him for Sale. Teams looking for infield depth or a reclamation project could be interested, but Boston might prefer to keep him as a depth option and hope he rebounds.
