Hendrick Motorsports star driver is arguably the most skilled and talented race car driver of his generation. His domination on the racetrack isn’t just restricted to stock cars in NASCAR, but he can get the job done in pretty much anything that runs on four wheels and an engine. Apart from NASCAR, sprint car racing is something that Larson is inclined towards. And that is evident from the multiple wins he’s had across events like the Chili Bowl Nationals and the Turkey Night Grand Prix.
However, Larson had a score to settle with his international trips to Australia. The 2024 off-season in particular looked to be the one where he could break his duck at the Perth Motorplex, competing in his racing series, High Limit. Well, the first two days of the event were like a kick in Larson’s gut, but he turned up the heat and came in clutch at the finale event.

Having cleared the first round, Larson was all set to clinch his first-ever sprint car win at Perth Motorplex. With 21 laps to go, Yung Money lost control of his race car and slammed hard into the concrete wall exiting Turns 1 and 2. He did come back after a quick repair job but only to see hometown favorite James McFadden go for back-to-back wins.
It felt like Larson’s run in Australia was somewhat cursed, as he just couldn’t get to the finish line. Reflecting on his streak of missed opportunities at the Perth Motorplex, he said, “Obviously when you have a car that good and then you make a mistake. Yeah, it crossed my mind after I’m like, but no, I mean we’re really really fast, so as long as I can keep it out of the wall tomorrow, I think we’ll have a good shot.”
And guess what? Kyle Larson finally delivered the goods, winning the richest sprint car race in Australia on the final day. Moreover, he also spoiled the plans of McFadden and his team to script a historic run and sweep all three days of the High Limit Racing event at the Perth Motorplex. With 9 laps to go in the race, Larson made the race-winning move, threading the needle on the inside lane to grab the race lead. Although McFadden did tail the #1 car, he just couldn’t retake his lead.

From here on, Larson just churned out clean laps and finally got the Australian monkey off his back. Along with the prestige of winning the event, Larson also bagged a mouthwatering AU$ 100,000. This is by far the richest motorsports event organized in the country. So it’s fair to say that his trip to the Great Southern Land in 2024 has been a success. With Larson finally taking care of business, it might feel like he is done with his trips to Australia. But it seems like he has different plans.

Yung Money loves to visit the Land Down Under
It is indeed rare for a NASCAR driver to be invested in other disciplines of racing. Over the years, very few drivers have been able to excel at NASCAR and other forms of motorsports. Tony Stewart is the one name that flashes in front of us when we talk about versatility, and Kyle Larson certainly is making a name for himself with his adventures beyond the traditional boundaries of stock car racing.
It’s not that the United States doesn’t host sprint car races or dirt racing events; in fact, drivers are spoiled for choices. But, for some reason, Australia is a place where Larson feels at home, and Perth, in particular, is the place where he would like to return for future events. “I love it. It’s a quick trip for me. I think I’d burn out if I was here for two and a half, three weeks. But here for a week is nice; just come and race and get out, and I love it too because you know the city of Perth is really nice.”

“So it’s just beautiful weather, an awesome facility, and then the racetrack is top-notch too, so I hope to keep coming back. I love it, and the travel’s not too bad; it doesn’t feel as long as it looks like on paper,” He said this while speaking to Sprint Car Hub after his second-day feature at the Perth Motorplex. With the High Limit International event in the bag, Kyle Larson will now shift his attention to the Chili Bowl Nationals scheduled for January 13, 2025.
