Charles Oliveira added his name to a long list of Brazilian champions in the UFC by stopping Michael Chandler at UFC 262. ‘Do Bronx’, who has been in the UFC since he was 21, fought the very best in possibly the most talent stacked division in the UFC.
His crowning moment in the sport was one filled with emotions as he broke down uncontrollably as the realization dawned on him that he was the lightweight champion of the world. It was a long journey that saw a lot of downs, but significantly more ups. However, something fans might have missed during Oliveira’s crowning moment was a funny incident that took place.

As Dana White was wrapping the belt around Oliveira, an unsuspecting Dan Miragliotta was hit in the groin by the belt. The clip later showed the veteran referee having a laugh with the UFC president, presumably talking about the incident.

What is next for the champion Charles Oliveira?
Charles Oliveira is smashing records not only in his weight class, but in the promotion itself. He holds the record for the most submission wins, most finishes, and the longest active win streak (at lightweight) among others. Moving forward as the champion, he will be aiming to continue the good run of form. However, with the belt on the line, the margin for error will be a lot less for ‘Do Bronx’.

The common consensus is that Oliveira will face the winner of Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier in his next title defense. If Poirier wins, he will most definitely fight for the title next. However, if McGregor wins, there is no guarantee that he will challenge Oliveira for the belt.
There is a fear in the MMA community that McGregor might secure the win over Poirier and then look elsewhere for fights and understandably so. The fight against Oliveira will not be as big as his fights against Poirier, or Nate Diaz even though it is for the belt. Therefore, it will be interesting to see who Oliveira’s next opponent will be.
