The main event at UFC Vegas 37 featured a light heavyweight bout between Anthony Smith and Ryan Spann. This was the first UFC fight card after a brief hiatus and it was a delight.

UFC loyalists viewed #6 ‘Lionheart’ and #11 ‘Superman’ as two extremely dangerous fighters in the 205-pound division. Hence, they were excited.

The fight was a litmus test for Spann as he was taking on an elite fighter and former title challenger. Unfortunately for him, he failed, as it was ‘Lionheart’ who put on a show with an impressive first-round submission win to make a bold statement and put the division on notice.

Going into the fight, Smith was on a two-fight win streak, whereas Spann had just bounced back into the win column with a stunning knockout win over Misha Cirkunov. Anthony Smith was in control from the very first minute of the fight. ‘Lionheart’ asserted his dominance with his offense early on and rocked Spann multiple times over the course of the first round.

The finishing sequence saw Smith land a right hand that dropped Spann to the floor. He then sensed an opportunity for a finish and immediately started working on a rear-naked choke, which he eventually secured. The security on site had to step in and separate the two fighters. ‘Superman’ and ‘Lionheart’ eventually calmed down and shook each other’s hands after a hard-fought fight.
