In the last pay-per-view event of the year, Dustin Poirier took on Charles Oliveira for the lightweight strap. Almost the entire UFC fan base and the media as well picked Poirier to win the fight. However, things did not go to plan for ‘The Diamond’ at UFC 269.

‘Do Bronx’ successfully defended his title for the first time against ‘The Diamond’ with yet another finish added to his highlight reel. Following the champion’s win over Poirier, many believe that Justin Gaethje would be next for ‘Do Bronx’.

In a recent interview, Gaethje shared his thoughts on Conor McGregor potentially getting the title shot ahead of him next year. He said, “He [McGregor] is so irrelevant. He has not won a fight since 2016 in the lightweight division. I’m ranked number one. I saw they updated the rankings, I’m number one now – that feels pretty good.”

The Highlight’ continued, “Congratulations, thank you sir, appreciate that, let’s go! I’m fighting for the belt, man. My whole life I’ve been working towards this, that is what’s next. If not, I’ll f***ing burn it down, it doesn’t matter. I will show up and start throwing dollies everywhere, I don’t know what the answer is.”

Will Conor McGregor get a title shot ahead of Justin Gaethje?

In recent tweets, Conor McGregor has suggested that he would return to the UFC for a title shot. However, given the record that ‘The Notorious’ has in his last few fights, he does not deserve a title shot on merit.

McGregor is the biggest star in the sport by far and guarantees big business for the UFC every time he fights. Hence, there is a strong possibility that he might get a title shot right away. However, that will not go down well with the purists and most of the fighters in the division, including Justin Gaethje.

There is a long way to go before Conor McGregor is fully healed up and is able to fight again. In all likelihood, by the time McGregor is ready to compete, the fight between Oliveira and Gaethje would already have taken place or been booked.
