Chris Weidman proudly wears his career achievements on his sleeve. While one of those achievements was ending Anderson Silva’s historic Middleweight title run, there is another major achievement. Weidman has never run into trouble with USADA, proving he has always been a clean fighter.
Clean fighters often raise suspicions about other fighters that don’t necessarily look like they are free of any external help. One of those fighters is Paulo Costa. Weidman wondered aloud whether Costa has ever popped for PEDs and then proceeded to admonish his performance against Israel Adesanya last September,

“I think that’s a good matchup for Whittaker. Obviously, Paulo is a big freaking monster, juice head probably. Has he failed for steroids? I’ve seen old pictures of him then and now it’s just like crazy. He’s definitely a jacked dude, definitely stiff, and he gets tired. Adesanya really just exposed him and picked him apart. That was a beautiful performance by him.”

Chris Weidman is one of the more reserved fighters in the UFC. Seeing him openly attack another fighter like this is quite odd. While one could make the argument of a possible fight, both men seem off each other’s radars right now. Weidman is rebuilding his position in the rankings, while Costa can get another title shot if he beats Robert Whittaker.
While many have wondered whether Costa has had external help for his insane physique, he has passed testing for every professional bout of his career. Except for one failed test, but that for IV and not PEDs. It seems like he genuinely has built that intimidating frame. However, Adesanya did give the roadmap to how to beat him.

Weidman gunning for a possible fight against Paulo Costa makes little to no sense right now, so this could be genuine animosity. If Weidman is looking for a fight, then this could be a compelling matchup. However, it would also be a scary one giving their difference in physical peak now.
We may not know what prompted these remarks but one thing is clear. Chris Weidman isn’t a big fan of Paulo Costa.
