‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ Kamaru Usman defended his belt for the fifth time this weekend against Colby Covington. The fight against ‘Chaos’ happened to be the second rematch of his title reign. Covington was his very first title defense and the animosity between the two fighters only grew from the first fight to the recent encounter at UFC 268.

Covington does not hold back when it comes to trash talk. ‘Chaos’ made that pretty clear in the build to the rematch accusing Usman of taking steroids and cheating in their first fight. He also went on to state that he does not respect Usman as a competitor since he cheated multiple times during their first fight. Usman, on the other hand, has been very respectful of his opponent going so far as to call him a top-15 welterweight fighter of all time.

The tipping point of the rivalry perhaps was the press conference prior to UFC 268. Covington crossed all lines when he talked trash about Usman’s father, who was previously incarcerated. ‘Chaos’ had also stated that he would not shake Usman’s hand after their fight. However, after the fight, both men squashed all the beef and showed respect for each other, which the fans appreciated a lot.

A fan on Twitter transcribed the interaction between Usman, and Covington after the bell rang. Covington said, “You know I’m just trying to sell the fight, for you too, so get that money bro, its all love.”

Was this the last title shot for Colby Covington?

‘Chaos’ is widely regarded by many as the next best fighter at welterweight after the champion. Dana White went on to state in the post-fight press conference that if Usman did not exist, he would have been the champion at welterweight.

However, for Covington, this is the second title fight where he has fallen short against Usman. It is unlikely that he will get another title shot as long as Usman is still at the top of the throne at 170-pounds in the UFC. However, if Covington were to secure a few wins under his belt, and there was a new champion at 170-pounds there could be a potential way to a title shot for the Miami native.
