Paulo Costa came up short against Israel Adesanya in his maiden title fight in the UFC at UFC 253. Going into the fight, there was a lot of trash talk between ‘Borrachinha’ and ‘The Last Stylebender’, with the former claiming that he would destroy the ‘skinny clown’ Adesanya.

However, the fight did not go as Costa would have expected. He was picked apart by Adesanya, who eventually finished him in round two. Adesanya’s post-fight antics following the win drew the ire of not only Costa but his entire team. Hence, ‘Borrachinha’ and his team are now out to even the scores against Adesanya.

In a recent interview with Brett Okamoto, Costa shared his thoughts on what would mean more to him- winning the belt or securing a win over Adesanya.

He said, “These two things are on my plan. Beat him (Adesanya) and take the belt. I think the belt will be naturally will happen. But beat him, if he is still with the belt, it will be soon and not too late.”‘Borrachinha’ continued, “I need to fight him again. And he knows who is the guy to beat him.”

‘Borrachinha’ is ranked #2 in the UFC’s middleweight division at the moment. The champion Israel Adesanya will most likely defend his belt later this year or early next year against the #1 ranked Robert Whittaker. Earlier, ‘Borrachinha’, who was scheduled to fight Whittaker in April, was forced to pull out of the fight because of an injury. Now, he will face the other man who Adesanya beat.

Going into the fight, the common consensus is that Marvin Vettori will implement the same game plan he did against another dangerous striker in Kevin Holland.
