Aljamain Sterling hasn’t fought since UFC 250 in June, where he had a sensational submission victory over Cory Sandhagen within two minutes of the first round. Dana White had said that the fight between Sandhagen and Sterling at UFC 250 was a title eliminator. However, we are still yet to see champion Petr Yan be booked after his win over Jose Aldo.

Sterling has taken matters into his own hands to expedite his booking against Yan. While Sandhagen beat Marlon Moraes, Sterling is at risk of falling out of favor as other bantamweights continue to impress. However, every fan knows that Aljo should be the next challenger. It is just a matter of when the UFC announces him against Yan.

Aljamain Sterling and his position as the next contender
As of today, Sterling is second in the bantamweight rankings. However, number one ranked Moraes just lost in sensational fashion to Cory Sandhagen who lost in sensational fashion four months ago to Sterling. The math would say that ‘Aljo’ is the natural next challenger.

However, the division is going to become a little more complicated when former champion T.J. Dillashaw makes his return in early 2021. TJ never lost his belt and was stripped off it after violating USADA’s PED policy. But, Dillashaw’s talent in the cage is not questioned, and he will look to insert himself in the title situation immediately upon his return.
So will Sterling get the Yan fight straight up? All the indicators say that he should. There was a debate for him or Moraes, as Moraes was the last man to beat Sterling inside the octagon. But with Moraes losing to a man that Sterling beat a few months ago, the match should fall into Aljo’s lap.
Now I can stop watching got damn Moraes knockouts until he fights again. Imagine watching your head getting drilled for 4-6 weeks and then doing a dance move while knocked out 😅

Whether Yan is avoiding the matchup or whether the UFC is just being slow about the booking in unclear. What is clear though, is that Sterling has earned the shot against Yan. We are yet to see ‘No Mercy’ defend his belt after his win over a past-his-prime Jose Aldo. However, Sterling will be a different challenge that everyone would look forward to.
