The lightweight division is in disarray at the moment. The champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is retired, but he has not been stripped of the belt thus far. Dana White believes that he can convince ‘The Eagle’ to come back for one last fight in the UFC to make it 30-0.
Meanwhile, the likes of Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, and Charles Oliveira all vying for the top spot to face Khabib on his return to the sport.

Oliveira is on a stunning win streak at the moment and disposed of Tony Ferguson in spectacular fashion in his last fight. He has now positioned himself well for a title shot. However, recent reports suggest that he will be facing Justin Gaethje next.

Therefore, the likely candidate to welcome Khabib back to the octagon should he wish to fight again would be the winner of Dustin and Conor.
From a business point of view, a rematch between Conor and Khabib would be a mammoth PPV event for the UFC. Their previous encounter at UFC 229 sold in excess of 2 million PPVs. A rematch would surely do as well, if not better than the first fight.
Is Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov 2 a pipe dream?
In a recent interview, Brett Okamoto of ESPN asked Dana White if Conor McGregor was the right opponent for Khabib’s return to the octagon. White replied, “No matter what you think of Conor personally, Conor McGregor is not only of the best in the world but one of the best to ever do it. And right now, he is as focused as he has ever been. I don’t know if this is going to be the same Conor after the Poirier fight, but if this Conor sticks around for another year, How do you not do Conor vs Khabib again?”

For a fight against Khabib to even be considered, Conor will have to beat Dustin at UFC 257, which is easier said than done. ‘The Notorious’ might also have to win in spectacular fashion to entice Khabib to grant him a rematch.
