Ben Askren shared his opinion on what it takes to create longevity in the combat sports world. He touched upon how some fighters sometimes don’t know when it is the right time to take that step back. He also shed light on Khabib Nurmagomedov’s retirement.
‘Funky’ recently sat down with Mike Heck of MMA Fighting. He spoke about how he never got his picture-perfect ending as a fighter and opined that Nurmagomedov should stay retired.

While responding to a potential Nurmagomedov comeback, Ben Askren said, “I hope not. I love reading about great athletes and I always wanted that for myself, but I f**ked it up, right! I always wanted an athlete to have like that picture-perfect ending because there are so few that actually have that ending. Where they are on top, they did everything they wanted to do and they ride out into the sunset and they say ‘I don’t need this S**T anymore!’ So I hope so, but I don’t know.”

Can Khabib Nurmagomedov return?
‘The Eagle’ is currently retired from the UFC with an undefeated professional record standing at 29-0. Fighting without his father in his corner was probably tougher than any opponent he’s faced to this date. He conquered emotional demons and retained his UFC lightweight championship at UFC 254.

Subsequently, as per a promise he made to his mother, he left his gloves on the Octagon floor and announced his retirement. Nurmagomedov focused on and built himself a legacy that has left a lasting impression on the UFC. He will forever be known for his unmatched skill and undefeated run. However, as per what his father had outlined for him, he may seek to improve his record to 30-0.
On the flip side, it may ruin the picture-perfect finale he had on Fight Island. The former MMA fighter thinks retirement at this point is a good decision and doesn’t want to see Khabib make a return. What do you make of ‘Funky’s’ comments? Do you want to see ‘The Eagle’ in action again, or are you satisfied with his decision to retire?
