Jake Paul just broke the hearts of MMA purists all over the world with his knockout of Ben Askren. Askren is a multi-promotion champion in MMA, but got to that status as a wrestler. He has also represented the USA in the Olympics, but all of it didn’t matter when it came to boxing against Jake Paul.
However, many are now pointing out Askren’s infamous poor striking proved nothing about Paul’s abilities as a boxer. MMA purists are still mad at Paul and want him to face legitimate competition. However, the man that has stepped up to the plate may not fill them with excitement, as BJ Penn has thrown his name into the hat to fight Paul.

Penn is a former UFC Lightweight Champion, but also the holder of the longest losing streak in UFC history. There is even footage of Penn being knocked out at a bar by a patron, so the chances he fares any better are slim. Especially adding the size difference the pair have and the fact that Paul is a genuinely competent boxer that Penn should stay away from.

BJ Penn is too past his prime to get into a boxing ring with Jake Paul. The damage his chin has taken showed in his last seven fights in the UFC, and there is a reason Dana White released him, despite Penn being one of his oldest fighters around. Whether or not one likes it, Paul needs to get an opponent that is of a higher caliber.
It seems like the most likely fight will be against Dillon Danis. Danis is one of Conor McGregor’s coaches and a former fighter himself. While he doesn’t have the credentials that Askren had, many would argue he is a better striker. But he isn’t a far superior strike to Jake from what we have seen of the two.

It seems like Paul will get strategic big-name fights that keep catapulting him up the ladder. His eventual goal is Conor McGregor anyway, and he wouldn’t mind hustling to get to that level.
