Thereafter, our focus will shift to former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling, who fired some shots at the current 135-pound kingpin, Sean O’Malley, following his ESPY award win. It might have been a jubilant moment when Michael Chandler found out that he was going to welcome Conor McGregor back inside the Octagon last year. But because of the uncertain nature of ‘The Fighting Irish’s comeback, UFC Hall of Famer Chael Sonnen believes he should take another fight. Moreover, Chandler also happened to call out McGregor’s former rival, Nate Diaz, who’s not even in the UFC, and that too, after he claimed to have been offered a world title fight against Islam Makhachev. These plans, according to Sonnen, won’t work out.
“That is as much opportunity that he’s going to have to fight Conor. He’s got to move on… he allegedly, all in the last week, has been offered a world title fight against Islam. Then he got in the way of his own headline and stepped in front of it and has called out Nathan Diaz for the Sphere… none of those things are going to happen,” said Chael Sonnen on the ‘Good Guy/Bad Guy’ show.
Michael Chandler is already 38 years old and one can only wonder how long he’ll compete as his twilight stages are upon him. It remains to be seen what the course of his UFC career will be and if Conor McGregor’s fight turns into a reality. Now, in our next piece of news, we have news of some banter from a former champion.
Aljamain Sterling takes aim at Sean O’Malley after his ESPY win
Sean O’Malley edged past fellow nominees Alex Pereira, Islam Makhachev, and Zhang Weili to clinch the 2024 ESPY UFC Best UFC Fighter award, and it surprised a lot of fans. His UFC title win and his successful first defense were all he needed to secure the award, but his former rival, Aljamain Sterling, wasn’t too thrilled about this ESPY award. While he did acknowledge O’Malley’s win, he did so in a cheeky way.

“Well earned [Face with Tears of Joy emojis],” Aljamain Sterling wrote on his X account. ‘Aljo’ did not receive the rematch he thought he deserved against Sean O’Malley, but now his friend and teammate, Merab Dvalishvili has a chance to bring that title back to their gym. Will ‘Suga’ respond? That remains to be seen as we move on to our final piece of news, involving a big-time heavyweight clash’s announcement.

Ahead of UFC 304, we have no idea about UFC 308, which will take place in Abu Dhabi this October, will look like, well, until now. While Magomed Ankalaev‘s wish for a title fight against Alex Pereira hasn’t quite seen the light of day yet, we do have one fight, a rematch between Ciryl Gane and Alexander Volkov scheduled for the October PPV. This news was broken by a Brazilian media outlet, ‘Ag Fight’.

After missing out on winning the heavyweight title last year against Jon Jones, Ciryl Gane made a triumphant comeback against Serghei Spivac. On the other hand, Alexander Volkov has been enjoying a winning ride with 4 victories in a row, and most recently dispatched surging fellow Russian contender Sergei Pavlovich. This fight could be a significant one to find out who will fight the winner of the Tom Aspinall vs Curtis Blaydes fight. We will have to wait and see how this fight pans out.
