The Yankees might not be done with Aaron Boone just yet. Maybe the Bronx Bombers aren’t looking to fix the team when it’s not really broken. The team’s general manager, Brian Cashman, gave a hint about what was going on in the mind of owner Hal Steinbrenner. Boone has taken the squad to six playoff appearances in seven seasons. Boone may not have the most impressive managerial resume, but people recognize him for his communication with the players. Now that his contract is up, the Yankees must reconsider Aaron Boone’s future.
In 2018, Aaron Boone took over as the Yankees’ manager. He signed a three-year deal with the Yanks in October 2021, extending his tenure through 2024, with a club option for 2025. In November 2024, they picked up this option, showing their confidence in Boone’s management. Under Aaron Boone, the Yankees have had 90 wins in five seasons (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2024). Only two other teams, the Dodgers and the Astros, have achieved these results in that period. And the Yankees’ overall record since 2018? An impressive result of a .590 winning percentage, making them one of the elite teams in Major League Baseball. Boone has also successfully managed player dynamics and maintained a winning culture in the squad. This has resulted in the Yankees’ higher-ups putting their trust in Boone.
Brian Cashman, Yankees’ General Manager, has chosen to reveal Aaron Boone’s future with the Yankees. Cashman said that both he and Hal Steinbrenner, the owner of the Yankees, are working on extending Boone’s management contract before the season kicks off: “Hopeful at some point sooner than later that we’ll be able to officially cement something.”

This news came in soon after baseball analyst Emmanuel Berbari said, “Four more years, Aaron Boone. I don’t want a lame duck entering this season. I want a mandate for Boone,” advocating for Boone’s contract to be extended. However, while Boone’s managerial tenure has benefitted the Yankees, it hasn’t been super transformational. Especially in the 2023 season, when the Yankees finished 82-80 and missed the playoffs. This was a new low for the Yankees, one they had not reached since 2016. Responding to the result, Hal Steinbrenner, the owner, said it was “completely unacceptable”.
But despite the downs, Steinbrenner is focusing on the ups of Boone’s management. He has made up his mind about Boone’s continuation after careful consideration. The Yankee’s owner has consulted with current and former players, including Aaron Judge, Andy Pettitte, and Nick Swisher. And their opinion has favored Boone. Boone has also expressed that he looks forward to continuing his management with the Yankees but did not reveal too many details about the contract renewal.
But in the history of the Yankees, managers like Torre and Casey Stengel have set high standards in their managerial tenure, achieving several World Series titles. And Boone falls short as he hasn’t led the team to a championship. This showcases the pressure of leading a prestigious team like the Yankees that inherently carries high expectations.

When it comes down to it, Boone’s worthiness with the Yankees can easily be judged by how the team has performed this season.
Offseason fumbles: can the Yankees bounce back with Aaron Boone?
The Dodgers and Mets are making headlines with their recent signings. On the other hand, something is keeping the Bombers stuck. Their offseason can be titled “What could have been.” The Yankees’ roster saw the additions of solid players like Cody Bellinger, Paul Goldschmidt, and Max Fried. And yet, the lineup did not find its spark. The best picks ended up with their rivals, like the Mets, and many wonder about the future of the squad. And the issue of the second baseman is unsolved as Ha-Seong Kim signed with the Dodgers. It didn’t end there; Marcus Stroman’s financial issues only added pressure to the squad’s environment.

But let’s not lose hope, as the Yankees have a reputation for bouncing back against all odds and might just end up in the World Series. In baseball, anything can happen.
