Philadelphia is known for three things: brotherly love, cheesesteaks, and an unwavering passion for sports. As a city that is home to several elite sports franchises and passionate fan bases, there are times when unexpected crossovers do happen.
The Arizona Diamondbacks’ arrival in Philadelphia for the crucial Game 6 of the National League Championship Series was a rare sight last night. A record-breaking football-frenzied Eagles crowd made the Diamondbacks’ arrival in Philadelphia unlike anything they had ever experienced before.

Nearly 70,000 football fans—69,879 to be precise—packed the streets of Philadelphia on a chilly October evening. The Philadelphia Eagles faced off against the Miami Dolphins at Lincoln Financial Field. Eagles supporters were ecstatic about their iconic clash with the Dolphins, and their celebration created quite a ruckus all across town.
The Arizona Diamondbacks, meanwhile, arrived in Philadelphia for Game 6 of the NLCS. However, the mayhem out on the streets prevented them from reaching Citizen’s Bank Park. It was becoming increasingly apparent to the D-backs and their manager, Torey Lovullo, that they required assistance as the streets became increasingly clogged.
As a result, a police escort was necessary to get the team to their destination quickly and safely, per the reporter, Bob Nightengale.

The Philadelphia Police Department, which is experienced when it comes to managing large-scale sporting events, responded quickly and effectively to the situation. With their sirens blasting and lights blazing, police officers safely escorted the Diamondbacks’ convoy through the throng of Eagles’ fans. The baseball players, decked out in their Diamondbacks uniforms, were escorted by motorcycle police and patrol cars, making for quite a picture.
Past Incidents that Captivated the Sports World

Protecting away teams at sporting events is standard procedure, but as we know from the past, tensions in these situations are not always easily resolved. One extreme incident was the ‘Malice at the Palace’ at an NBA game in 2004. After a fight broke out between players and spectators, some athletes went into the stands to settle the score. Players were suspended, and legal action was taken as a result of this incident.
Similar incidents of violence tarnished the 2016 UEFA European Championship. There were fights in Marseille between Russian and English fans, and people were hurt and worried about their safety. The French government increased security and police presence in an effort to restore calm.

These incidents highlight the need for police presence at sporting events. It is imminently important that sports be kept as sports. Conflicts should be avoided, and the safety of players, coaches, and spectators must be guaranteed.
