Every sport has a set of rules which are needed to be followed by the players. But the same hardly goes for the fans that sometimes cause problems at the stadium. Umpires are duty-bound to run the game and have been the first receptor of these problems. As umpiring is always under scrutiny, any decision disliked by the fans gets a vehement reaction. Sometimes it often ends with the abuses and disruption of the play.

This is happening in the youth baseball leagues for quite some time. As these leagues work as a stepping for the young players, any problematic situation can affect them negatively. To stop such instances, a youth baseball league has found its way. Though the means sound absurd, the league’s president has an explanation for choosing this rule.

There will be a big penalty if you disrespect the umpires now!

Deptford Little League has set up an unusual rule to be followed by every fan, especially parents while attending the game. It has come after the repeated instances of umpires abuse from the parents that forced two umpires to resign. According to nbcnewyork.com, the league’s president, Don Bozzuffi, got fed up with these instances. He then took the situation into his hand and made a strict rule to manage the over-hyper fans.

The rule states, “Any spectator deemed in violation would be banned from the complex until three umpiring assignments were completed. If not, the person would be barred from any Deptford youth sports facilities for a year.”

When asked if this rule is working or not, Bozzuffi said, “So far, it’s working like I’d hoped and just been a deterrent,” Notably, this is not the only league that is facing such problems. They have reported instances of umpire abuse from the parents in the entire youth league setup.

Umpire abuse is not limited only to baseball!

As reported, bad spectatorship is not limited to one game. It has affected every second sport. As the instances increased, the National Association of Sports Officials surveyed in 2017. They took the responses from over 17000 referees, and the results were shocking. 39% of the umpires said parents caused the most problems with fair play, followed by coaches and fans.

Though the situation did not improve, one league had to take a tough stance. They implemented the rule in April and have shown promising results, with nothing severely reported. It would be interesting to see if other leagues will implement this in the future. Will the entire youth system find a better alternative to this strict rule? Only time will tell!
