The 2023 MLB season has exceeded fan expectations. It has also recorded a significant rise in stadium attendance, proving that the league is doing great. But the situation is not similar for the New York Yankees. One of the most successful teams is touching new lows every day, with the season becoming a tough pill to swallow. It has brought the Yankees GM Brian Cashman’s competency under doubt.

And even after it, he is almost getting a free hand with his decisions, but this was not the case two decades back. Cashman has been a Yankees GM for almost 20 years now. But things have not always been smooth for him. The same happened after one of the Yankees win, during the 2003 season, which was not satisfying for George Steinbrenner. He showed this during his call with Cashman, who is under pressure currently after a recent trade failure.

When George Steinbrenner Called Brian Cashman ‘the Worst’

Brian Cashman’s words have failed to sync with his actions this season. Because of it, there is no positive change happening that can make the fans happy. And the current losing run has added more to their satisfaction, who continue to hope for Cashman’s firing. But the team’s owner Hal Steinbrenner is not listening to it.

And when their own words failed to make their unhappiness reach his ears, fans are now taking the help of his father and former owner George Steinbrenner. A Twitter user recently shared a post with the caption, “Even with all of his faults, you have to love George Steinbrenner. He was literally one of us.”

The Tweet indicated the anger of George for Cashman. While sharing his dissatisfaction, he termed Cashman, “You’re the worst fuc*ing GM.” It came even after the team’s win, which showed the passionate side of the former owner. He was very vocal, unlike his successor Hal, who continues to back Cashman.

And George’s passion was the only reason Cashman looked for solutions. He changed his method and shifted analytics, which helped them build powerful bullpens. It was visible in the team’s success, but things have changed again. And it seems analytics has become a problem, which A-Rod also pointed out in his recent take.

Are Analytics Not a Solution Anymore?

Though the Yankees have benefitted from using analytics, it doesn’t seem to be working for them now. The same was the thought of 2009 World Series winner Alex Rodriguez. He compared the use of analytics before and after in a recent interview with The Michael Kay Show.

He said that the Yankees won 26 titles without analytics and added, “I think sometimes it’s too much. I think you have teams. Or these analytic teams are not doing their job.”

It seems Alex’s take is very much true. The Yankees have recorded their worst performance since 1995, even after having a strong analytics team. And things do not look good either for the future. Cashman will again have to find an answer to that. Will it take a phone call from Hal Steinbrenner, like his father? Will the Yankees be able to find the solution to their problem? Only time will tell.
