Famously or infamously, being the Yankee bad boy, Derek Jeter ventured through a long list of romantic escapades through his 20-year-long career in Pinstripes. As a result of his bad boy reputation, a rumor surfaced about the eventual five-time Yankee World Champion handing out gift baskets to the women he had a physical relationship with.
In little to no time, this news spread like wildfire and took over the entire country. Over time, Jeter blatantly denied the rumor. But the country loved Captain Clutch more than one could imagine, and something that Derek Jeter supposedly did was bound to be replicated by the entire nation. Similarly, a Jeter fan once tried to replicate Jeter’s purported gift basket antic but managed to infuriate a usually calm and composed Derek.

In the fifth episode of Derek Jeter’s documentary dubbed ‘The Captain’, the Yankee legend narrated an incident from a time when he was waiting in a queue at Starbucks. A fan approached him and brought up Jeter’s supposed gift basket tradition with the probable hope of getting some validation.
Jeter said, “I’m at a Starbucks one time, and some random guy, behind me, says, ‘hey, just want to let you know, i’m giving out gift baskets cause you did’ and I turn around and said, you fu**ing idiot. And the look on his face. Like he thought I was going to say, ‘yeah, good job man.'”
As the episode continued, Jeter straight up denied ever sending gift baskets to anyone. He said, “It’s a story that became larger than life. I mean, people keep regurgitating this story. It never happened, never happened.”
