The New York Yankees have given rise to numerous MLB legends across generations, and a prominent name is Yogi Berra. Considered one of the greatest baseball players ever, the late Berra remains an eternal icon of the sport. A recently trending throwback image shows Berra indulging in an off-season job during his playing tenure. He also had a fellow MLB star giving him company. 

Yogi’s granddaughter Lindsay Berra is a famous MLB columnist and has made significant contributions to promote the sport. Lindsay recently shared a throwback image of her late grandfather Yogi selling Christmas trees in the MLB offseason. Yogi had former MLB star and St. Louis Cardinals icon Joe Garagiola Sr. alongside him in the frame. Seeing the vintage image on Twitter, the MLB fans couldn’t stop themselves from giving their input.

What did the fans have to say about the MLB legend’s flashback moment? 

The late Yogi Berra enjoyed one of the most extraordinary MLB career records and took absolute pride in his accolades. Playing for the Yankees and later the New York Mets, the 18-time All-Star Yogi remarkably won 10 World Series championships. Consequently, he also got the due honor of an MLB Hall Of Fame induction post-retirement. Yogi’s catchphrases were as popular as his glamorous sporting milestones.

Yogi’s granddaughter Lindsay Berra shared the throwback image on Twitter, quoting, “Love this pic of Grampa and his pal Joe Garagiola selling Christmas trees in a lot on The Hill in St. Louis, back when #MLB players had to have jobs in the offseason. Happy Holidays, everyone! Yankees. STL Cards.” 

 

While a fan pointed out, writing, “Just a quick correction. Most ballplayers back then didn’t “have to” have jobs in the off season. The average ballplayer made much more than the average US worker. But they worked in the off season because that’s what men did back then. They worked. It was expected of you.”

The success stories that continued beyond the playing days

After having retired from the sport as a player, Yogi became a coach and manager. He tasted equal success in all of his endeavors in the baseball world. On the other hand, Garagiola Sr. became a popular broadcaster after retiring as a player. 

Filmmaker Sean Mullin, director of the Yogi Berra documentary titled ‘It Ain’t Over’, once spoke about Yogi, saying, “George Steinbrenner was a polarizing figure but obviously loved the Yankees and loved Yogi, and there was a strain on their relationship. Great stories involve difficult situations. I think the way it turned out ultimately, at the end, was wonderful and for the best.”
