New York Yankees Captain Clutch Derek Jeter and his purchase of the MLB franchise, Miami Marlins, are well-versed by countless baseball fans. But did you know that the man, Jeffrey Loria, who sold Marlins to Jeter, was interested in getting in his business way before he became a baseball legend? Yes! When Jeter had completed only a couple of years in the big league, the former owner of the Montreal Expos and Marlins, Loria, had shown interest in having Derek on his team.

It was the moment in 1999 when Jeter had started spreading his wings. While doing so, he was making a mark in the sports world. By that time, Jeter, on his way to achieving greatness, had already won three World Series. Notably, countless people in the baseball world had already found themselves in awe of Jeter’s incredible on-the-field talent. Loria knew it might be impossible to make it happen. But he still tried bargaining with General Manager Brian Cashman. It was to have Jeter on his team in exchange for an already established, rising player.

Loria was told continuously by a former baseball pitcher, Beattie that it is rare to no chance that the Yankees would ever trade their star player Derek Jeter. Even so, Loria wanted to give it a shot. And hence he made Beattie call Cashman to try for the trade. He wanted the trade to happen at the cost of the outfielder, Vladimir Guerrero, who is now a legend of the game.

Beattie, on his take on calling Cashman, spoke at the time of Jeter’s Marlins deal. He spoke about how Jeffrey was willing to go to great lengths to have Derek Jeter on his team. In Beattie’s words“Mr. Loria really wanted Jeter. I kept telling him it wasn’t going to happen. I called (Yankees GM Brian Cashman) at a point, I said ‘Jeffrey is really interested in Jeter.’ Cash said ‘No, we’re not going to trade.’ I said I understand that, just for conversation and I’m not even sure we would do this, would you trade him for Guerrero?”

Cashman agreed that trying to trade Guerrero for Jeter was an insane thing to do. Even so, he was not willing to let go of their franchise player. And the rest is history. Derek Jeter went on to win two more World Series while wearing Pinstripes. It was before he bid farewell to the game in 2014.
