Are the Yankees' glory days over, overshadowed by the Dodgers' rising dominance?

Los Angeles is living up to its “City of Champions” title once again. As the Dodgers have taken the World Series by storm, clinching those first three games with authority, everyone could feel the inevitable victory in the air. But winning isn’t just about lifting trophies—it’s about respect. And what happens when that goes out the window? For the New York Yankees, this loss didn’t just sting; it left a bitter aftertaste. As the Dodgers’ victory parade roars through LA, the Yankees were left with the painful reminder of not just defeat but the added jab of their rivals celebrating at their expense.

The Yankees faced a baffling defeat against the Dodgers, who won their second World Series title in the last five years. Their unflappable teamwork also helped them cement their first victory in a full season since 1988 by beating their opponents in Game 5 and taking the lead to 4-1. But as if the defeat was not enough to bother the Yanks, their rivals ensured to take sharp digs in the scouting report – the Dodgers noted that the “Yankees were talent over fundamentals”.

The New York Yankees have established their dominance in the baseball field over the years, appearing in 41 World Series so far and emerging victorious in 27 of them thereby becoming the team with the most wins by any team amongst the major professional sports leagues in America. But, despite this, the Dodgers did not hesitate to throw a shade at their opponents. As reported by the NY Post, the Dogers’ players were motivated by being told that their opponents would inflict self-harm if “you run the bases with purpose and aggression.”

The Yankees were also being told to be the worst baserunning team by every metric. The Dodgers undermined the Yankees in position outfield and claimed it to be the worst as well. And now, this claim can be quite serious, especially for Aaron Boone. Boone himself once donned the fields; hence, for someone like him, getting to hear that the team does not work on fundamentals might be quite troubling. Interestingly, the Dodgers’ report came at a time when their opponent quite lauded their efforts.

The Yankees would not have anticipated such a scathing defeat. Despite attempting to bounce back in the 4th match, they could not carry forward the streak and did not just lose the match but the title as well. However, while the Dodgers did not fail to take sly digs at their opponents, the Yankees resorted to congratulating their opponents on their performances.

Have an interesting take?

Speaking about the defeat, Yankees’ pitcher Nestor Cortes Jr. shared how their game was subpar as compared to their opponents. “Baseball comes down to execution, right? If you don’t execute and the other team does it better than you, then they’re obviously going to win. And that’s what we ran into in the series, where they execute a lot of plays. And I’ve said since Game 1 and 2, it felt like they did everything right,” he said, further highlighting how the Dodgers neither made enough mistakes nor left any opportunities to capitalize on the errors of their opponents.

They have Mookie Betts in right field and every ball off the wall, he kept it to a single, and just stuff like that, it’s like you can’t capitalize on them and when we made [mistakes] they capitalized, so that’s massive,” Cortes added. But for the Dodgers, the assessment is something different. Now, it would be interesting to see if the Yankees critic the statements from their opponents or choose to answer them on-field.
