The New York Yankees just don’t seem to get away from being on the news! The reason? The Yankees’ starting pitcher, Luis Gil, found himself away from the game due to his high-grade lat strain. Now with Luis Gil being injured and recovery to take more months, the Bronx Bombers have been requested to bring back their former starter. But who is it?
Well, the Yankees have not named their pitcher, Marcus Stroman, as the first choice to replace Luis Gil. It’s quite surprising for many; however, everything has a reason behind it. They should trade for Jordan Montgomery, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ pitcher, who used to play for the Yankees in 2022. However, he was later traded to the Cardinals, and in 2024, he signed with the Diamondbacks and somehow flopped again. That’s the reason the Diamondbacks are looking to trade him, so there may be a chance for the Yanks. Isn’t it?
The Arizona Diamondbacks owner, Ken Kendrick, also cited Montgomery’s signing as a major fault and a poor decision to invest money in him. So, given the high chances of the Diamondbacks trading him, adding him again could raise a lot of eyebrows in the Yankees considering his recent poor performances. Another reason behind not considering him as a good starting pitcher is his high 6.23 ERA across 21 starts, which is not at all good in the trade market, isn’t it?

However, the New York Yankees feel that Jordan Montgomery still has a lot of potential to fight back and prove his mettle. More importantly, it was long ago in 2020, so there might be some consideration for him, although it’s important that he promised to live up to the expectation when given an opportunity to revive his career. However, the main problem that remains is that Montgomery still has around $22.5 million pending, and the chances of pitching excellent to prove his worth for the contract value seem very unlikely.
However, despite such negatives, Jordan Montgomery still has an upper hand over Marcus Stroman, and the Yankees seem not interested in Stroman either. They may look at some other options too beyond Montgomery, right?
What’s your perspective on:
Should the Yankees gamble on Jordan Montgomery despite his recent struggles, or look elsewhere for talent?

The Yankees still looking for other potential starter options
While replacing Luis Gil with Jordan Montgomery may be a good option, it’s also true that getting someone from within the team can benefit the Yanks more. With Will Warren going 6-5 with 23 G and a 5.91 ERA, the Yankees may likely allow him to play the minors and bring him later into the major league games. Although Warren still hasn’t shown something extraordinary, differentiating himself from the other quality options as per Aaron Boone, he still can be a top prospect for the Yankees. But there’s another option for the Yankees!

Yeondrys Gomez is a new name that’s in the air, also known as the team’s number 25 prospect. Gomez can be a strong bet, given that he has been out of the minor league and is looking to make his way into the number five rotation for the team in case Marcus Stroman fails miserably. However, one thing that stops him from leaving a significant mark is his lack of good health. Still, Gomez’s ability to use different kinds of pitches can make it difficult for the hitters to hit against him properly.
