The New York Yankees are in the headlines again, but when are they not? The 2025 MLB season is on the horizon, and the hype around them is off the scale. If anything, last season was immensely heartbreaking for the team, where they made it to the World Series but unfortunately, missed a mark against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

This year, with all the drastic alterations in the roster and injuries piling up, doubts are all over the place. Losing their ace, Gerrit Cole, is incredibly impactful. He secured the title of AL Cy Young Award in 2023 with a 2.63 ERA and 222 strikeouts making for one of the finest pitchers in the game. And honestly, he was irreplaceable.

Not just Cole, Juan Soto’s year-end departure was like basically someone who delivered in the clutch and came through when it mattered most. He had a .275 average and 35 home runs in the previous season. On top of all that, key players like D. J. LeMahieu, Luis Gil, and Giancarlo Stanton out for the foreseeable future, with Paul Schmidt and Mark Leiter Jr. taking it on a day-to-day basis.

Interestingly, WFAN’s Chris McMonigle has a message for the Yankees’ doubters: “This Yankee team that nobody believes in…this is still the team to beat in the American League.” He subtly just warned to not count them out just yet. Despite key exits and injury setbacks, he believes that the Yankees still top the list in the American League.

At the end of the day, it’s the NY Yankees we’re talking about. They’ll never just fade in thin air. They still have the greatest of all time, Aaron Judge. Their farm system is firm as of now. And let’s not forget that Anthony Volpe is stepping up too. They’ve stormed through roster shake-ups before and still managed to remain a powerhouse.

The Yankees always end up proving that they’re still one of baseball’s most feared teams. Hence, the American League can’t sleep on the Yankees just yet.

Yankees might bring back $22 million pitcher following unexpected trade development

The Yankees pushed all chips in this offseason. They did lose Juan Soto but also strengthened their roster with Cody Bellinger, Paul Goldschmidt, Max Fried, and Devin Williams. On paper, they checked all the boxes of being an ultimate powerhouse. But unfortunately, the spring training threw a curveball.

The roster has been shaken up by piled-up injuries. All the key players are sidelined, including DJ LeMahieu, Giancarlo Stanton, and Luis Gil. Not just that, Gerrit Cole is out for the entire season because of his lingering elbow injury. The once-frightening rotation of the Yankees isn’t the same anymore.

Presently, they’re trying to fix things up with players like Will Warren and Carlos Carrasco in the lineup. But if any other injury setback slides in, they wouldn’t be left with any choice but to look outside. That’s where Jordan Montgomery enters. The ex-Yankee was a key piece of their rotation from 2017 to 2022 and he’s now a trade candidate.

After helping the Texas Rangers to get glory in the World Series in 2023, Montgomery signed with the Diamondbacks. But things didn’t go as they were supposed to. His 2024 season has been a tough spot. Moreover, Arizona’s owner hasn’t hesitated at all to voice his anger.

Now, according to sources, teams are showing interest in trading for Montgomery. Interestingly, the Yankees could be one of them. Bringing Montgomery back would be more than just filling a rotation spot; it would be so much familiar. He has an idea about the organization, the pressure, and the anticipations. In a season where stability is rare, that might be exactly what the Yankees need.
