On April 8, 2025, the roof of the Jet Set Nightclub located in Santo Domingo crumbled during midday hours. It happened when merengue-renowned singer Rubby Perez was performing live. Reports claimed around 58 died, and 160 were injured. Dotel, aged 51, was initially rescued but tragically passed away en route to the hospital. “Dotel was taken to one of the designated hospitals. On the way there, his condition worsened, and he died,” said police spokesman Diego Pesqueira.
Additionally, Dan Horwits, Dotel’s agent, commented on this incident and expressed, “The BHSC Family is saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Octavio Dotel.” He continued, “His energy, positivity, and zest for life were infectious to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.” The former Yankees star was renowned for his 15-season career in MLB, including a 2011 World Series win with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Astros took it to X and shared, “We are heartbroken to learn the tragic news that former Astros pitcher Octavio Dotel was one of several individuals that passed away when a roof collapsed in his native Dominican Republic last night.” Dotel has spent five seasons with the team, and during his time with the Astros, he was one of their top relievers.
