Giancarlo Stanton surpasses Mike Trout—Is he the most underrated player of the last decade?

Here we go again—another day, another baseball record! This time, it’s Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton making headlines. The 34-year-old has once again proven he’s one of the game’s top power hitters! And what could be his key to success? Well, it’s undoubtedly consistency. Yup, you heard it right; with his second home run in two days, Stanton has now hit 25 homers in 10 seasons, making him the only player to achieve that feat. Talk about setting a new standard!

And if we are talking about benchmarks, don’t you think the MLB 2024 season is shaping up to be unforgettable? Especially for the Yankees, captain Aaron Judge has also become one of the five persons with 50-plus home runs in three seasons! And now this: Stanton has just added to the excitement. Previously, the 34-year-old was tied with Mike Trout, who has notched nine seasons with 25+ home runs, who surprisingly had a very phenomenal start to his career. So, what went wrong and how did Stanton pull ahead?

Well, we have to blame that on the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign. Before that, Mike Trout racked up at least 27 home runs a year in each of his first eight seasons in the big leagues; imagine! But he has been unable to reclaim that consistency coming out of it. Since 2021, he’s been battling injuries, which have impacted his game. He’s a three-time MVP, so we know he’s capable of incredible performances, but those injuries have kept him off the court a lot. He’s only played 266 games since 2021.

Now, he did have a standout year in 2022 when he hit 40, which was impressive. But aside from that, the rest of his performances have been a mixed bag. Where he has recorded, only 8,18, and 10 respectively. Trout undeniably had a rough stretch since the last three seasons but that doesn’t mean the Yankees slugger had it easy.

How did Giancarlo Stanton surpass Mike Trout despite the odds?

Giancarlo Stanton’s been battling the injury bug too, missing 266 games over the past five seasons, but he’s managed to fight against the odds. Despite the setbacks, he’s kept his hitting game strong—finishing 2023 with 24 homers and belting 35 in 2021 and 31 in 2022. This season, he hit 25 home runs in just 95 games. And guess what? With four weeks left in the regular season, Stanton is eyeing the 30-home run mark once again.

Have an interesting take?

Till now he has already got seven 30-homer seasons under his name, the most of any active player! He’s currently tied with Manny Machado, Nolan Arenado, Paul Goldschmidt, and—yep, you guessed it—Mike Trout again. On a side note, do you know both of them debuted just a year apart? Stanton in 2010 and Trout in 2011. It’s like these two baseball sluggers are on a parallel track of power and performance. But if we look at career home runs, Stanton leads the pack among active players with 427, while Trout trails behind with 378.

So could this be because of the 33-year-old’s injuries? If he had stayed healthy and consistent, he might have been the one to set that milestone first. Well, maybe, but for now, Stanton holds the crown, and his recent sweet victory home run was the icing on the cake for the Bronx, who clinched an 8-4 win over the Texas Rangers on Monday. With the Yankees leading their division, it feels like anything is possible right now—even breaking their trophy drought. What do you think? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
