It’s basically done for the New York Yankees! There was a time when the Yankees used to win the most World Series titles and now it’s been almost 16 years since they won the last title in 2009. While the team selections and signings are to blame for their rather dismal performance, they have made a call to get into an agreement with Tyler Matzek, as reported by MLB insider Chris Cotillo on February 11. Think that makes sense?
Tyler Matzek has come off winning a World Series title in 2021 with the Atlanta Braves, where he had a 1.72 ERA across 13 games that he played. Matzek joined the Braves in 2020, and it continued to 2024, where he pitched a 3.40 ERA in 143 games. Although he may be good partially, his recent struggles in the World Series leave a big question mark on the Yankees’ decision. Isn’t it?

The Yankees’ signing a struggling World Series winner comes as a surprise for many
The New York Yankees have finally agreed to a minor league deal with the left-hander and pitcher Tyler Matzek. While the Yankees are looking to improve the bullpen at quite a fast pace, the addition of the 34-year-old Matzek will provide depth to the American League champion. Although his recent performances are nothing sort of extraordinary, on February 11, MLB insider Chris Cotillo shared a post on his X handle stating, “It’ll be a minor league deal for Matzek, who impressed scouts in a recent showcase. Agreement in place.”

According to Cotillo, he has impressed the scouts in recent times, and having spent four years with the Atlanta Braves makes him quite experienced to play for the Yankees too. While his peak came in 2021, where he posted a 2.57 ERA with 1.222 WHIP, the left-hander struggled massively, posting a 9.90 ERA in 11 games, and later even traded to the San Francisco Giants, where he made only five minor league appearances. Yet, the Yankees reportedly decided to pursue him, which might turn out to be a massive gamble, leaving the Bronx Bombers hanging in a thin threat to judge what comes ahead. Don’t you think?

The Yankees look to improve their roster
While signing Tyler Matzek doesn’t guarantee anything, given the struggles he faced, the New York Yankees’ losing out on Bryce Harper would definitely be something to regret. However, they have been quite active in the offseason, getting Jazz Chisholm Jr., who could play at second base. Chisholm had a good 2024 season with a.256 average, 73 RBIs, 40 stolen bases, and 24 home runs, making him a great bet for the Yankees. But wait, there’s more!
The New York Yankees have also signed free agent Tim Hill, who played for the Chicago White Sox and the Yankees in a combined 62 matches. He also went 4-0 with a 3.36 ERA, while another notable signing is a non-roster player named Allan Winans, who went 0-2 with a 15.26 ERA and 2.35 WHIP. So, looking at the signings, the Yankees are surely not the best team to look out for; however, they still have Paul Goldschmidt as their first baseman. That’s something, isn’t it?
Well, although it is great, the Yankees have missed too many options, firstly Bryce Harper. They have been adding players who are struggling to make a significant mark. What do you think of Matzek’s signing by the Yankees? Do let us know in the comments below.
