The New York Yankees made it into the World Series this season after 2009. Get this—the last time they won, they had Captain Clutch, and Alex Rodriguez was on the team, so, it’s been a hot minute! This time, too, the Aaron Boone team came short of the Dave Roberts team – the LA Dodgers took a quick lead of 3-0, and even though the Yankees had a great one game, it wasn’t just enough. Now, the Yankees’ attention is on free agency – whether they can finally break the championship drought depends on it.
Brian Cashman and the Yankees have their focus on retaining their star of the season – Juan Soto. The outfielder is going into free agency, and everyone is excited. But they are seemingly set to lose Gleyber Torres, who is deemed the MLB’s top second baseman. He has 49 home runs from 2022 to 2023 and has hit free agency. Cashman recently talked about him, and it doesn’t seem like he is interested in getting Torres back.
Are the Yankees ready to dump Gleyber Torres?

When talking about Gleyber Torres, Brian Cashman chose his words carefully. While he praised the second baseman’s impact, he remained noncommittal on a plausible reunion. But he did talk about Torres’s awesome run at the postseason: “But I appreciate his efforts while he was here and he was mashing down the stretch like we needed him to be.” The Yankee GM mentioned everybody has their strengths and weaknesses, so, he isn’t going to sit and attempt a dissection on Torres too.
Brian Cashman said he appreciated Gleyber Torres’ efforts “while he was here” and then mentioned these alternatives at 2B:
– Import a third baseman and move Jazz Chisholm Jr. over
– Promote from within, someone like Caleb Durbin (keep an eye on him)
– Trade or free agency https://t.co/VmesiOv30X— Max Goodman (@MaxTGoodman) November 5, 2024
Still, Brian Cashman’s comments were cautious at best. He did say that Torres, being a free agent now, could have plenty of options and calls from elsewhere. But he also said, “Obviously he’ll have a lot of conversations with a lot of teams that have a need in that area, and that might include us, who knows. But appreciate his efforts while he was here.” Now, this remark, while leaving the door open, also hints at a certain uncertainty Cashman has.
The situation is fluid, plus, Torres comes with a whopping $36 million contract. So, right now, with Soto in the wagon of importance, it’s difficult to see if Cashman will cash this player. Also, he seems to already have alternatives in place.
The Yankees have a backup plan if Torres departs
As Gleyber Torres heads into free agency, the Yankees will have the challenge of finding someone to fill his place. After all, this has been his spot for a great many years now with the team. Moreover, Torres is expected to draw interest from teams like the Seattle Mariners and the Blue Jays. The Jays, in particular despite having several infielders, have no MLB starters. So, Torres would be a lucrative option for them – not to mention he has six years of experience in the majors and is only 27 years old.

He has a lot going for him, but the Yankees are not rushing. Brian Cashman recently outlined several alternatives to the second baseman role, mostly internal adjustment. One option he gave was moving Jazz Chisolm Jr., whom they acquired in a trade deadline. They also have their prospect, Caleb Durbin, who has been consistent. Cashman even has his doors open for external free-agent options.
Given these were his options, it seems like he has already thought over them—if not Torres, then who? While it remains to be seen whether the New York Yankees re-sign Torres or choose another route., what do you think the Cashman will do? Let us know in the comments.
