The world’s best baseball player just set himself up to become the world’s richest baseball player as well. After cracking a mammoth deal with the LA Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani took his future into his own hands. 2034 is the year that’ll mark the next step of his more than half a billion dollars worth of future, and MLB’s Martian has something to say about it.
Yankees outfielder Jasson Dominguez just shared a social media post that portrays the limitlessness of Ohtani’s deal, hinting at how it will be helpful for the 20-year-old’s free agency future. Not only did it make way for better offers to take place for prospective baseballers, but it also reminded the major leagues of the scope of a deferred payment structure.

Jasson Dominguez shared a reel on his Instagram story where someone off-camera hands a pitching glove and a ball to a toddler. In the next frame, the same kid sits on a sporting field, wearing the glove, and is handed over the ball inside it. The caption of the story reads, “Me after seeing that Shohei Ohtani deal.”

The post jokingly hinted at how the Martian plans on using the details of the Ohtani deal to draft a similar one once he achieves free agency in 2029. He will look for a new deal starting with the 2030 season, currently operating on a $5 million signing bonus from 2019 and a deal worth $720,000 for last season.
It doesn’t need to be said that the slugger will fetch a high-value contract post-2029, given his minor league record of 36 homers and 154 RBIs across three seasons and his major league record of 4 homers and 7 RBIs in just 8 games! That, however, might not reach anywhere near the Dodgers‘ $700 million pinch that Shohei Ohtani himself agreed to work on. What has been revealed about his deferred payment-based contract so far?

The $70 million salary of Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million/10-year contract is set to be disbursed twice: once every year and once in between the 2034–2043 timeframe. Per The Athletic, he’ll receive just $2 million each year of his $70 million salary.

The rest of the $68 million will pile up until the amount of $680 million is ready to be banked by Ohtani when his contract ends. It gives the team room to focus their resources on other aspects, like a certain luxurious addition to their stadium. Additionally, it also saves them millions in taxes. Will it be mutually beneficial where baseball is concerned? Only time will tell!
