The glory days of the New York Yankees seem long gone. There is no more Derek Jeter to lead the Bronx to championships, no more Core Four to help establish unprecedented dominance of the Bombers and no more George Steinbrenner to whip the team into shape with his strict rules. Glanced at with a 2023 lens, there is no more Joe Torre as one of the most beloved managers on the team.

Today, Bronx fans have to contend with Aaron Boone. While the Yankees love playing for him, their fans are not so sure. They want someone like Torre back, who had a special connection with his players. The Pinstripers held him in such high regard that the former captain sat down to share his thoughts on the Hall of Famer once.

Joe Torre Was Like A Father to Derek Jeter

What can be said about the 83-year-old Torre that hasn’t been spoken before? Now the special assistant to the Commissioner of Baseball, the former manager, has a list of achievements a mile long. Having managed the Yankees from 1996 to 2007, Torre led them to six AL pennants and four World Series wins. Needless to say, he was special to the members who played under him, including the Core Four.

In 2013, MLB announced that Joe Torre would be in 2014’s Hall of Fame class. Soon after that, Jeter had some touching words to share. “He’s like a second father to me. He’s a second father to all of us. He’s the reason why we’re here today. He gave us an opportunity. He trusted us when we were younger and gave us an opportunity to play. So we all wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him,” the retired captain told Steiner Sports.

It was a different age for the Yankees, who trusted their manager with the game, as did fans. In 2023, while current captain Aaron Judge has words of praise for ‘Boonie’, fans want him gone. In fact, even Joe Torre may have insinuated something against the skipper in July 2023.

Torre’s Simple But Powerful Message for New York Yankees Manager

Take it from a legend, he knows how to do the job well. 2023 has seen a strange dishonesty take over the Yankees. While Boone frequently appears for media days, there’s apparently not a lot he can say about what’s going on with the organization. The biggest example was Judge’s toe injury from July 3rd, details of which took a long time to come to light.

In a WFAN appearance at the end of July this year, Torre simply said, “Don’t lie to them. You still have to tell them ‘Hey, we need to get better in this area or that area, and we can do it.”

Incidentally, Boone played under Torre in 2003, and the former skipper has confidence in the new one. But another thing the Yankees need to earn is their fans’ trust, which will only come with honesty.
