Veteran All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado has become a major point of trade discussion since the beginning of the offseason. On January 28, top Yankees’ insider Bryan Hoch expressed interest in Nolan, but there’s something that may prevent his entry to the Bronx: Arenado is a righty, and the Yankees need a lefty, so, there are some troubles.
The St. Cardinals third baseman, Nolan Arenado, has not done much good for the team, leaving a poor impression in the last few games. With his declining performance, the Platinum Glover has wanted to move away from the Cardinals after declining the offer that has been placed on his table by the Houston Astros. While the deal may still be possible, the name of another team is doing the rounds—the Boston Red Sox.

Yankees want Nolan Arenado, but there’s a problem
The New York Yankees are waiting for the St. Louis Cardinals to trade Nolan Arenado. The 33-year-old right-hander’s presence would improve their defensive ability at the Bronx, which is in line with the Yankees’ focus on preventing runs. If the Yankees sign Nolan Arenado, everything appears to be in order, but there is also a significant issue. Bryan Hoch noted, “I keep waiting for them to come back around on Nolan Arenado because that’s somebody that the Cardinals are motivated to move here.” Bryan believes that it would be the right call if the Yankees go for him given that the Cardinals are already in talks with other teams to trade Arenado.
If Nolan Arenado was a LHB he would be a Yankee. Unfortunately as a RHB, the bat is just a bad fit here. https://t.co/1BIm6KUA7x

Bryan further added that the Yankees have DJ LeMahieu on the infield and they are looking to trade Marcus Stroman; however, it’s quite surprising that they continue to lack an effective lefty reliever in their bullpen. While he mentioned the pitcher, Tim Hill, who has been a left-hander for the Yankees, they are still looking for some lefties, given that the Bronx is suitable for them rather than the righties. And now, Nolan Arendao, being a right-hander, does not make him a probable choice that the Yankees were looking for. Isn’t it? Well, unless they make a final decision on it, this factor will continue to prevent Arenado’s entry into the Bronx.
The Red Sox plans to get Nolan Arenado in their lineup
While there has been no official confirmation yet about the Cardinals trading Nolan Arenado or the Yankees getting him, the name of the Boston Red Sox has emerged as a new contender. The Boston Red Sox has been known for their strategic moves, and now they have come up with an alternative plan after missing out on Alex Bregman. The Red Sox face a major gap in their lineup due to the absence of a right-handed batter, and Nolan seems to perfectly fit there. Arenado’s.272 batting average,.719 OPS, and 578 AB, along with 16 homers in 2024, do not justify his potential and caliber; however, he could definitely be a solution to the Red Sox’s right-handed gap. But will that be possible without any changes?

Will the Yankees overlook Arenado's right-handed bat for his defensive prowess, or is it a deal-breaker?

Well, if the Red Sox sign Arenado, there would be a domino effect, and they might need to make some changes to the roster. Their third baseman, Rafael Devers, might need to move to the designated hitter role. However, given that Arenado still has three years left on the contract, he could be a cost-effective alternative option to Alex Bregman. It would not only improve the depth in the Red Sox’s lineup but would also turn them into a formidable force to reckon with.
