Yankees Icon Derek Jeter Once Left His Beloved Nephew in Tears With a Cold Confession After Dealing With 50,000 People

Derek Jeter is a baseball superstar who led by example and played the game with full dedication. He was always truthful and straightforward with everybody throughout his career. Jeter’s straightforward nature is one of the things that millions of fans still love about him. And for the same reason, one of his biggest fans is none other than his nephew Jalen Jeter Martin.

He’s most well known for the famous hat tip in his uncle’s last Yankees home game. There was one such moment with his nephew where the Yankees legend’s straightforward nature might have been the wrong choice.

These straightforward words from Derek Jeter almost led to his nephew’s heartbreak

Jalen Jeter Martin once asked his uncle Derek Jeter an important question on an important day. On the day of Jeter’s retirement, his nephew asked him whether he could wear Jeter’s number #2 jersey when he plays for the Yankees. Jalen said “When I play for the Yankees can I wear your number 2?” Replying to the same, Derek said, “When you play for the Yankees, can you wear my number 2? Nope, hahaha. No one can wear it anymore, man.”

Although he was faced with a tough question from his nephew, Jeter chose to tell the truth instead of lying. This made his nephew visibly upset and Jeter consoled him, not knowing how to better explain the situation.

Jeter didn’t have the words to explain that nobody would be able to wear his number ever again. And while trying to console Jalen he said “I’ll let you wear it”.

This instance with his nephew shows just how honest and straightforward Jeter really was. Jeter and his nephew are very close, Jalen being Jeter’s sister’s son, and has seen some of Jeter’s biggest career moments.

Jalen can still wear Jeter’s number 2 jersey!

Although Jalen cannot wear his uncle’s jersey if he ever does play for the Yankees. Notably, the Yanks have officially retired the iconic #2. Jeter’s jersey number #2 is still synonymous with his name. Such was the impact he had while playing the game.
