So as the New York Yankees have come to terms with the season they’ve had, the team management has gone back to the drawing board. Looking to improve their fortunes after a disastrous 2023, the fans wanted big changes. Well! So it looks like the ball has started rolling with the exit of the Yankees batting coach – Sean Casey.

Having joined the Yankees on July 11, Casey’s term saw the Yankees hitting a nadir in their hitting form. With the Strikeout rates increasing to a whopping 26.2 percent, the Yankees were just not hitting the ball. So his exit was bound to happen and the Yankees are now looking for their third batting coach in 2 years. There are two candidates whose names have come up prominently.

Hitting was the Achilles’ heel for the Pinstripes last season. Initially, they were going well due to the immense contributions of Captain Aaron Judge but post his injury, it seemed that the team forgot how to hit. They were bottom tier in almost all the hitting stats and had a batting average of mere .227. So Sean Casey’s exit is not all that surprising. Though it was not he who started this problem, but inherited it. The team has had trouble with batting for a couple of years now. So now two names are making rounds for the vacant position.

So as can be seen, the names include two prominent yester-year Yanks. Tino Martinez was a part of the legendary Yankees team of the 90s that won 4 World Series in 5 years. Nicknamed “The Bam-tino”, he was popular for his big hits. So Yankees possibly going after him is not a surprise. Although Tino has only coached one team yet – Miami Marlins in 2013. It was not very impressive though, with the team ranking at the bottom of the National League in every hitting metric with a batting average of 0.236. Yet the Yankees have a different level of talent in their team so things could be a little different here.

The other name is Nick Swisher – a part of the 2009 World Series winning squad. Known for his streak of hitting over 20 home runs for 9 seasons. He’s another strong candidate for the role. Though he has no coaching experience, his extraordinary discipline is a skill that the team would like to have.

The Yankees hitting stats without Aaron Judge

The impact of Aaron Judge on the team can be understood in a simple manner, the batting average of the Yankees without Aaron Judge would have been .212 which is even lower than what they had in 2023. Judge played in only 106 games, still, his 37 home runs were the most by a Yankee last season.

The Yankees’ dependence on Aaron Judge is not ideal. Baseball being a team sport needs every member to contribute in order to win but the Yankees in 2023 failed in that task. So now with a new coaching staff, they’d be looking to change that story and become a well-structured coherent team. Until then what do you think the New York Yankees should do to improve themselves.
