New York Yankees fans are calling for Brian Cashman’s head. 2023 has been one of the worst years of the franchise’s storied history, with a series of losses leaving the team demoralized. A roster riddled with injuries and underperforming players has suffered throughout the first half of the season, but the second half doesn’t seem to be faring much better. And who does the blame game end with but the front office?

Hal Steinbrenner staunchly supports his longtime managers Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone. Long gone are the days of the Boss, Hal’s father, George Steinbrenner III. Whatever his faults, Papa Steinbrenner was focused on World Series victories at whatever cost possible, but the current team falls desperately short of his ambitions. While the players are at fault too, no doubt, fans are annoyed with Cashman and Boone.

Well, the two have an interesting history worth exploring.

When Did Brian Cashman Become the Yankees’ General Manager? How Well Has He Performed Till Now?

Cashman is one of the OGs. Starting out as an intern in 1986, a job he got through family and friends’ connections, Cashman used to work as a minor league scout. After a series of promotions, from baseball operations assistant to assistant farm director to major league administrator, the 56-year-old finally arrived at his current position in 1998. He was the second youngest MLB GM in history.

World Series success came to him early. Under his tenure, the Yankees have won six AL pennants and four World Series championships, the last in 2009. But since then, he has failed to reproduce those stats and the Bronx Bombers remain in a 13-year drought with no signs of improvement. However, in 2017, it seemed like Cashman had found the perfect scapegoat for his failures.

When Did Aaron Boone Become the Yankees’ Skipper Under Cashman? Has He Won Anything?

Former Yankees manager Joe Girardi announced in October 2017 that he would not be rejoining the team next season after his contract expired. On December 4 of the same year, Aaron Boone, a former hero in New York, was announced as the successor. In 2018, Boone got his first postseason win as a skipper after the Yankees defeated the Oakland Athletics in the wild-card game.

Boone has been successful as far as playoffs are concerned so far, although 2023 looks like the year he might finally fail. Without a World Series championship under his manager’s belt, things do not look good this season.

Former Skipper Joe Girardi Once Made the Same Mistakes That Resulted in the Team’s Downfall

Joe Girardi went into the Yankees’ front office as the successor of a beloved man. Joe Torre had taken the club to new heights in his initial years as manager, though the latter half of it fizzled out. Girardi rallied the Yankees to a World Series victory in 2009, but the same success never came back. There was, however, a moment in Game 4 of the 2010 ALCS that seemed to repeat itself in 2018.

After five great innings, A. J. Burnett was ready to take a break, but Girardi kept him on the mound, which eventually led to the pitcher giving up a three-run, sixth-inning homer to Bengie Molina of the Texas Rangers. A similar thing happened with Boone and Luis Severino in the 2018 AL Division Series loss to the Boston Red Sox.

Everyone is liable for mistakes, but maybe the obvious ones can be avoided by studying the past.

The Franchise Did Not Do Much to Change the Losing Streak in 2022’s Offseason

In the winter of 2022, the Yankees seemed to be in a great place. They had re-signed Aaron Judge, Anthony Rizzo was back, and there was a new powerhouse in Carlos Rodon. But for almost two months, Judge was a free agent. There was no backup plan had he failed to stay in the Bronx.

The 2022 offseason predictions had looked hopeful – less of Josh Donaldson and Isiah-Kiner Falefa, more of Aaron Judge and Harrison Bader. There were even hopes for Anthony Volpe and Oswaldo Peraza. But then nothing went as expected, of course.

After some spectacular moves, the Yankees captain is on his second IL stint of the season. Whenever Bader is healthy, he seems to shine, but those performances keep getting far and fewer in between. Rizzo has not hit a home run in over two months. Volpe has been a good rookie but needs more experience, while Peraza could do better if given more chances. After a series of bad performances, IKF seemed to have pulled himself up. But let’s not even talk about Josh Donaldson.

2023 is only seeing the Yankees at the bottom of their division, struggling to perform offensively.

Can No One Make the Yankees Hit?

The one good thing about being a major league team of renown is the availability of endless resources. The fact that the Pinstripes don’t seem to be using them is another matter. After struggling in his rookie year, Aaron Judge took help from a hitting coach that drastically improved his batting. If the Yankees be willing, maybe he can help out the entire roster with a few tips so that the embarrassment can end.

Will Aaron Boone Become the Meat of the Wild?

Boone will come under fire for his everyday decisions, but some understand that the roster ultimately lies in Cashman’s hands. No significant changes were made in the last offseason to improve the team and the manager can’t change that. Unless the GM wakes up from his slumber and shakes things up, Boone can’t do much.

Some fans are calling for Boone’s head while some call for Cashman’s. Some think it’s a shame the boss can’t be fired because removing Hal Steinbrenner – cutting the head of the problem – might be the first step in the right direction.
