The Bronx is burning. New York Yankees fans have had enough of watching the team blow itself up, mired in insanity. Despite promises of a better 2023, the team seems to have imploded in on itself, prolonging the 13-year World Series drought. It’s another year with no playoffs, even with captain Aaron Judge back in action. If no one will do anything, Bronx fans will take matters into their own hands, coming for Brian Cashman.

The general manager has held his position in the front office since 1998. And while he boasts 4 Fall Classic titles, most of them have been won largely due to an already existing framework. The last decade has shown his utter incompetence in the role and still, owner Hal Steinbrenner seems reluctant to part with him. Well then, Bronx baseball lovers will just have to get their own hands dirty now.

Social media has long been abuzz with hate for Yankees management, asking for replacements. But Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone have been stuck in their positions, unable to do much for the team. Other than Judge and Carlos Rodon’s signing, the 2022 offseason did not see any big new names added to the roster. This year, when the trade deadline came and went without any major moves on Cashman’s part, it was the last straw.

Superfan Jon Borowski, aka “JonFromMaspeth” on X, formerly Twitter, is organizing a special ‘Fire Cashman Night’ on Friday, Sept. 22. It’s the start of a home series against the Arizona Diamondbacks and Borowski is urging fans to come bearing ‘Fire Cashman’ signs. No matter how big or small, each one will make an impact.

Another Twitter user, ‘Fan of the Yankees’ @realboshek, pointed out that finding a replacement for Cashman is an obvious move. What Pinstriped fans should focus on is Hal Steinbrenner. Instead of ‘Fire Cashman Day’, it should be ‘Hal Doesn’t Care Day.’

The age of Papa Steinbrenner is a bygone era and his son has dumped the franchise’s legacy down the drain. It’s unfortunate that one can’t fire an owner, otherwise, a majority of the Yankees’ problems would have been fixed long ago. If Hal is gone, new ownership might automatically bring in new management, which would mean no more Cashman or Boone. But is it just a distant dream? Or can it be turned into a reality?

The Chain of Command is Cemented

Hal Steinbrenner sits at the top unchallenged. His backing of Brian Cashman, whose current contract runs through 2026, is uncontested as well. And down the chain of command, Cashman is apparently reluctant to part ways with Aaron Boone too.

According to Andy Martino of SNY, “There is only one way Boone will be fired, according to four sources with direct knowledge of the Yankees’ inner workings: managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner would have to overrule GM Brian Cashman and his baseball operations department. And that has never before happened with a managerial decision.”

Well, as long as the current front office and ownership maintain their place, the nightmare will continue. 2023 is already ending in disaster, despite a surge of good performances here and there. It’s too late to work on this season now, but 2024 can still be saved. But only if the management decides to shake things up.
