The Bronx fanbase is unforgiving. Used to constant success over the years, the historic franchise has been home to some of the game’s greatest players, so much so that sometimes we forget their historical context. To mark out that exact length of the Yankees’ history, the ballclub has been hosting an ‘Old-Timers’ day for many years. But in the background of 2023, an old-timer, Aaron Boone, had it more complex than the rest.

The 2023 season has the New York Yankees teetering on the brink. Despite the recent additions to the roster bolstering the lineup enough to course correct beyond a losing record for the season, the focus has shifted for the Yankees to the postseason. While still unlikely, the Pinstripes are still holding out hope. Their failure to notch up a decent record for the season has been, by and large, laid at the feet of the players and the front office. And that sentiment finally came to a head in Yankee Stadium.

Yankees Fans Emotions Boil Over

Aaron Boone has been in the Yankees dugout as a manager since 2018. Despite successfully making it to the post-season on almost every occasion since, the Pinstripes have failed to convert any of their opportunities into any silverware much to the chagrin of the fanbase. However, Boone’s record as a player remains substantial.

Playing at third base and acquired by the Yankees in 2003, Boone was instrumental to the Yankees World Series run that saw him hit a walk-off homerun in the 11th innings to close out the ALCS. But it was his record as a manager that earned him boos as he was introduced on Old Timers Day at Yankees Stadium.

The Yankees manager has been severely criticized in the season for a lack of results despite a roster that features some of the most prominent names in MLB at the moment. But the emerging signs appear to be positive.

It ain’t over, till it’s over. That’ll be the mantra for the Yankees in the final stretch of games. With Fangraphs recently marking their chances for making a post-season as low as 0.4% it seems unlikely that the Yankees will be featuring for much longer, but if there’s a chance to be taken Boone will be eager to secure it.

Having bought in reinforcements in the form of several youngsters called up from the farm system and now doing well in the major league set-up, the signs seems to be by and large positive for Boone.

Provided he can make sure that youngsters Jasson Dominguez and Austin Wells settle into the side, the Yankees hopes remain alive. And with it Boone’s prospects at staying there too.
