The New York Yankees prided themselves for years on a powerful farm system, producing major-league players. This pipeline could establish championship-caliber rosters along with payroll flexibility. However, after an aggressive offseason that focused on quick effect over long-period depth, the Yankees suffered a massive decline.
Baseball America’s latest rankings confirm that damage. The team’s farm system has plummeted 15 spots, marking the steepest decrease in recent memory. This fallout from their win-now mentality is highlighted by their Juan Soto trade. While Soto’s availability undoubtedly enhanced the team’s lineup, the question remains, was the cost too high?

Reflecting on the Juan Soto trade
The New York Yankees made headlines when they traded for Juan Soto. The generational talent with a career of .946 OPS and three All-Star selections is a fan favorite. His bat adds a level of offensive firepower rarely identified in the Bronx. In addition, Soto’s pairing with Aaron Judge arguably established the best-hitting duo in baseball. In 2024, Juan posted a 5.5 WAR season with a .410 OBP, proving why he is a dangerous hitter.
However, the acquisition might have come at a vital cost. The New York Yankees parted with multiple promising young players, containing top pitching prospects Drew Thorpe and Michael King. Thorpe, the Yankees’ 2023 Minor League Pitching Prospect of the Year, had a 2.52 ERA with 182 strikeouts in 139 innings across High-A and Double-A. And King had a 2.75 ERA in his first full season as a starter and was assumed to play a vital role in the rotation.
The Yankees also sent catcher Kyle Higashioka, and pitchers Jhony Brito and Randy Vásquez to the Padres. The outcome? A farm system once filled with high-upside arms is now among the weakest in baseball.
The New York Yankees enhancement pipeline in crisis
While the Juan Soto trade accelerated the decline, the New York Yankees’ struggles in enhancing high-effect prospects go beyond one transaction. MLB Pipeline noted, “New York’s system has suffered from inconsistent enhancement, with top players failing to fulfill expectations.”
Jasson Domínguez remains a beacon of hope, however, his torn UCL last season raises concerns about his durability. The switch-hitting outfielder, who burst onto the situation with four homers in his first eight MLB games, is still months away from returning. In addition, top infield prospect Oswald Peraza struggled at the big-league level, hitting just .191 in 52 games.

This drop in rankings is part of a larger trend. This downfall has several aspects to blame. The team’s scouting and drafting approach, once a power, has yielded fewer effective players in current years. The last homegrown Yankee to enhance was Anthony Volpe, posting a modest .686 OPS in his rookie season.
MLB insider Jon Morosi weighed in, “The Yankees could prefer to attack the lineup in free agency instead of making a top-of-the-market splash for starting pitching.” Such an approach highlights why the New York Yankees have continuously focused on outer additions instead of replenishing its farm system.
It’s like a lesson to MLB teams. The Yankees‘ farm system collapse shows the cost of focusing on short-period success. Now, they don’t have Soto and their enhancement pipeline is far from getting to the top. With limited elite players, the Yanks need to manage their aggressive spending with sustainable player enhancement.
