Giancarlo Stanton, the Yankees’ outfielder, is battling an elbow injury, something that’s worrisome. Due to his severe elbow pain, Stanton’s time with the Yankees is still in doubt as the players progressively make their way to spring training. Although MLB insider Evan Roberts believes the Yankees do not have a margin for error right now, Stanton’s injury exposes a lack of depth in their lineup, doesn’t it?
So, while the New York Yankees look for a replacement, it is worth mentioning that Stanton had a good run in 2024, with a .273 batting average, with 15 hits, seven home runs, 16 RBIs, and nine runs scored across the 14 games he played in the postseason. But as of now, with Giancarlo Stanton’s elbow injury playing spoilsport in the spring training start, concerns are rising if he can find a way to make a comeback. But it is nothing new.
Stanton has passed through multiple phases of injury in his career, which sidelined him for longer stretches. With his absence from 48 games, it’s a major headache for the Yankees, as stated by MLB insider Evan Roberts on February 18. “If he’s missing considerable time, who’s his replacement? I like, literally, look at the Yankees roster, look at their outfield in general, and I tell you, they don’t have the guys who can replace him.”

Right now, the Yankees boast of three outfielders, Jason Dominguez, who didn’t have a great season, while their fourth outfielder, Trent Grisham, had been battling a hamstring issue. Meanwhile, their fifth outfielder, Everson Pereira, also had Tommy John last year, and he couldn’t bat since May 2024, which indicates the Yankees’ lack of depth in the outfield.
But that’s not all; the Yankees have not selected a third baseman yet, and Roberts believes that the team is in a somewhat “dangerous” situation right now. So what might be the solution?
The Yankees need to bring out the best in their new additions
While Giancarlo Stanton’s performance as a one-dimensional slugger remains under doubt, more concerning is his ability to stay on the field for long. Now, the Yankees have a major problem with his injury, and they hope their new additions—Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger—give their best. Goldschmidt’s 2024 performance was moderate; he had an average of .245, posted 65 RBIs, and .716 OPS, scoring 22 home runs, whereas Bellinger hit .266 with 137 hits, 78 RBIs, and 18 home runs in 130 games he played.

Moreover, the New York Yankees will also look forward to Jazz Chisholm Jr., who posted .500 while slugging in 46 games. He also had a .256 batting average, with 24 home runs, 73 RBIs, and 144 hits, which could be beneficial for strengthening the Yankees’ infield too. However, as of now, the Yankees would look to take things slowly and allow Stanton to play a little bit so that he could make a quick recovery.
