Strange things happen in a baseball game every day. No matter if you’re the fan sitting in the bleachers, the hitter on the plate, or even the commentator from the press box, strange things aren’t limited to any of them. The most recent case of the New York Yankees’ long-time commentator John Sterling is the perfect example of the same.?

During the last night’s game between the Yanks and their fiercest rival, the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees commentator was left bloodied. However shocking it might have been for Sterling to get hit in the face, his reaction to it was more amusing than any other.

In the ninth inning of the Yankees v/s Red Sox, the former was about to win the game by 3-1. That’s when the unimaginable thing happened. Thirty-year-old Yankees reliever Clay Holmes threw a foul ball to Red Sox’s third baseman Justin Turner. The foul ball to Turner spun back over the netting behind home plate, soaring right into the broadcasting booth.?

As it did so, it managed to hit the iconic broadcaster John Sterling on his face. Specifically hitting on the left eyebrow, the foul ball left the commentator a bit bloodied. Although, within seconds of getting hit, Sterling was back on the mic, and could be heard saying, “Ow! Ow! Ow! It really hit me. I didn’t know it was coming back that far.”

As a result of getting hit right in the face, Sterling has taken time off from the booth for merely a couple of days. Saying that he’s fine, the Athletic reported that Sterling would be right back to his job on Monday. About returning, the commentator said,?“I?m not going on the IL.”?Seems like even Sterling knows that the Yanks cannot afford yet another person to go on the IL.

Sterling is winning hearts!

Sterling, at 84 years of age, has remained the Yankees broadcaster for over three decades now. Best known as the radio play-by-play announcer of the Pinstripers, Sterling is a well-known figure of the Yankees organization.?
