It is not a baseball season until some broadcasters stop calling games and start swinging at controversies. In the latest installment of “Who’s Got the Mic and no Filter”, a Yankees broadcaster made some less-than-flattering comments about Pete Alonso. This has triggered a war between the Queens and Bronx sides on social media. If causing trouble was a sport, this broadcaster would be a top contender for MVP. This drama is making more headlines than a walk-off home run.
When your team signs a good player, of course the opponents will criticize the move. And it was the same case with Yankees fan Micheal Kay. The broadcaster has caused a major stir with his comments about Pete Alonso this time. While the Yankees have not made any big signings this offseason, their cross-town rivals have been making huge changes. They not only signed former Pinstriper Juan Soto but also have resigned Pete Alonso.
This move was filled with twists and turns with a new development to the story every day. At one point, the Yankees had also considered signing Pete Alonso but did not after looking at the inflated price tag. And now after Pete Alonso took a big pay cut and signed a two-year deal with the Mets, Yankees fans have started to understand that they are may be fine the way they are as a New York team. And the comments by Micheal Kay proved this.

Pete Alonso has always been a great player who has put up good stats with a massive number of home runs. And after Alonso’s signing, the Mets are looking very strong with him, Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Brandon Nimmo. Kay’s comment comparing Alonso to a Nissan has caused a major reaction from both sides of New York and broken into an all-out brawl on social media.
When trash talk hits a grand slam: Bronx vs. Queens fans go all in over Pete Alonso
When a player has a bad season but is still signed for a big contract, you can call that paying a “Maserati price for a Nissan”. But when the player has performed well but is still signed for an average deal, you can not say the same. This single comment by Micheal Kay has divided New York into two, and they seem to be ready to go to war with each other.
The yankees pay stanton 32.5 mil for what.

Pete Alonso and Giancarlo Stanton are similar types of players. They are both well-known for their big-hitting abilities. But a Mets fan questioned the New York Yankees fans who were supporting this comment by Kay. Pete Alonso has been putting up far more impressive stats compared to Stanton. In the 2024 season, Alonso had an average of .266 with 46 home runs while Stanton had .201 with 24 home runs. And even with this, Stanton is given a contract of $32 million per year. This made the Mets fans question the logic of Yankees Fans.
He prob should be worried about the Nissans in the Yankees rotation
— christopher cleere (@CCleere71842) February 9, 2025
The New York Yankees have had a very average team for the past 5–6 years. There have been many players that have been at best average for the team, and it is starting to show. The Yankees have not won a World Series since the 2009 season. And after Micheal Kay commented on Pete Alonso, many of the Mets fans pointed out the problems in the Yankees team. They have compared some average Yankees players to Nissan in turn.
That’s exactly what he is.
— Conservative Blogger (@conservativebl8) February 9, 2025
There were some fans who supported this comment. Although Alonso put up good home run stats for the season, people have questioned his batting average. For many, the player getting on base is more important than home runs and it shows. So when this comparison was made they were like, “That’s exactly what he is.” The Yankees fans feel that Pete Alonso lacks the star power to be compared to the like of Maserati-like players.
How does he feel about the Max Fried contract?
— Michael Mulry (@michael_mulry) February 9, 2025
The Queens team fans then raised questions about Max Fried. The Yankees offered him an 8-year, $218 million contract. Although Fried had a good 2024 season, a pitcher earning around 27 million a year is more. With Pete Alonso basically signing a 1-year, 30-million contract, it is fair to say that it was a steal for the Mets. If Kay can question a player who has proved himself over the years, it is fair to say that he should also question the Yankees for their signings.

They still haven't gotten over Soto, its sad really
— DOOPS (@gtdoops) February 9, 2025
One fan thought the Juan Soto loss might still be stinging. The Bronx saw what baseball could be with the 26-year-old in 2024 and yet, the Yankees couldn’t keep him for the price that was being asked. Both Scott Boras clients have ultimately landed in Flushing Meadows with the NYY still struggling.

The controversial Nissan remark launched by Michael Kay sparked the most recent borough heated dispute while uncovering several awkward realities about both teams. The trend for paying average players Maserati-level salaries started with the Yankees. So the fans think instead of questioning others, the New York Yankees should improve themselves first.
