Despite a challenging stretch, the New York Yankees stand united in adversity. After suffering a heavy defeat in the opening game, the St. Louis Cardinals clinched the series with a win in the final game. However, despite the loss, an unforgettable gesture from Yankees’ ace Gerrit Cole towards his former teammate, now Cardinals’ pitcher Jordan Montgomery, stole the spotlight.

Both pitchers demonstrated commendable performances in the ultimate game of the series. Yet, Montgomery, with six strikeouts, led the Cardinals to another victory. Cole’s unexpected acknowledgment of the former Yankee surprised many and provided a prime example of sportsmanship for the wider sports world.

Gerrit Cole accepted the defeat in the best way possible

As the Yankees aim to climb from their current third position in the division, every win becomes critical this season. Conversely, the Cardinals sit at the bottom of their division. With just 35 victories and nearly fifty defeats, every triumph significantly boosts the Cardinals. Understandably, the series held high stakes for both teams, but the Cardinals clinched it without much trouble.

Following the game’s conclusion, sports columnist Benjamin Hochman took to his social media to share an endearing gesture by the six-time All-Star, Gerrit Cole. Hochman reported that according to Jordan Montgomery, “former Yankees teammate Gerrit Cole, his counterpart Sunday at Busch, texted Montgomery postgame with a meme of a cowboy tipping his cap.” 

Cole and Montgomery’s journey has been extensive, from donning the same pinstripes to facing off on opposite sides. Yet, their bond and mutual respect remain unaltered.

Cole’s fanbase just got increased

With six strikeouts, Jordan took his team to win, but even with five of them, Cole had to face defeat. Despite brutally losing an important game, Yankees’ ace’s gesture is winning the hearts of the entire baseball community.
