Derek Jeter was a generationally over-achieving player with a sentimental fandom that stretched beyond his achievements in the park. However, did everyone love Jeter? Ideally, the answer would be ‘Yes.’ But would that answer encompass rival fans? Comedian and Red Sox fan, Seth Meyers, thinks otherwise as he once pounced on captain Jeter during Saturday Night Live.

While the Yankees and Red Sox rivalry is the biggest on paper, the Yanks are the greatest and most successful Major League team all across North America. Their rivalry was at its peak during the 84-year-long World Series slump of the Red Sox. Yes, 84 is a larger number. The contest manifested over the years and historically became one of the greatest all-time battles.
Derek Jeter on Point, Counter-Point
The Saturday Night Live episode was released way back in 2001. In the episode, Seth Meyers represented:?“Derek Jeter Sucks,”?while Derek Jeter represented, “No, I don’t.”
The conversation started with Jeter justifying by listing his achievements as a Yankee shortstop. Amongst all his achievements, the most notable is his five-time World Championship victory. Jeter said, “I know my good friend Seth here is a Red Sox fan. And that’s good. The fans really are what keeps MLB going. But I hope Seth can see that I play hard all the time and I always do my best for the team.”?Seth persistently interrupts Jeter by screaming, “YOU SUCK!”
Jeter responds to that by saying, “I’ve heard this argument before, Seth. In fact, Red Sox fans have been nice enough to share this argument with me every time I play in Boston. Or walk in Boston. Or go on a date to a fancy restaurant in Boston. Also, sometimes, they drive to Baltimore when we play the Orioles to tell me I suck.”

Moving on, Seth deep dives into the Red Sox and Yankee rivalry and says, “I’m sorry Derek, I really am. It’s just you and people like you ruin my entire childhood. So I swore that if I ever got within six feet of a reel Yankee, I’d kick his ass. But then I saw you. And I knew that could not happen. But thankfully, this can happen. YOU SUCK!”
The conversation ends with Seth asking Jeter to go and play for Boston, which Jeter respectfully denied. Ultimately, Jeter obliges Seth by signing his Red Sox hat.
Yankees vs Red Sox rivalry
The Pinstripes and the Red Sox’s rivalry goes back to the initiation days of the MLB. Today, while this rivalry has reduced from volatility to civility, it stays as one of the biggest rivalries in the history of American sports.
The trigger to the rivalry was Babe Ruth’s transfer from the Red Sox to the Yankees setup. However, to date, the Yankees have held the upper edge while totaling their all-time head-to-head matches. Out of the 2,314 games the two rivals have played, the Yanks have won 1,251 while the Red Sox are at 1,049.
