Since the departure of Alex Rodriguez in 2016, the New York Yankees have been on the hunt for a new power hitter. Their search came to a close in just one year, as they discovered their new superstar, Aaron Judge. Standing at an impressive 6-foot-7 and weighing 282 pounds, Judge’s impressive size and strength were a testament to his physical capabilities and confidence. So much so, that he aimed to break an almost immovable John Cena record, with just a little more practice.
In 2017, Aaron Judge’s meticulously crafted physique was put to the test as he hit 52 home runs, earning the top spot for most home runs in the American League. However, before this remarkable achievement in his rookie year, Judge had already spoken about his gym regimen with Baseball Prospectus and confidently declared his ambition of breaking John Cena’s record on the bench press.
Aaron Judge was almost ready to take on John Cena’s record
In an interview with Baseball Prospectus from May 2017, Aaron Judge received a question about whether he could actually bench press 400 pounds, as he had initially implied on television.
The New York Yankees outfielder and future captain confidently responded by saying that he’s already crossed the halfway mark on 300. And with a little more time, he could easily touch 400. Judge said, “I think so. The most I’ve gotten up to is 367, but if you give me some time, I could do it. I think I could get there. A couple of more workouts. Give me a year to prepare and it’ll be true.”
Subsequent to his confident response, the slugger received a question about the potential chances of touching 500 pounds on the bench. To this, Aaron Judge said, “Haha, yeah. Definitely need a little more time.”

Notably, in 2022, Aaron Judge smashed 62 homers and broke the record for most single-season home runs in the American League. Do you think he can bench press 400 pounds or above today? It wouldn’t be very shocking given that he’s clearing the ballpark at ease (and 62 times in 2022).
