Derek Jeter says that the guards at the ballpark used to inform the others with a secret message when Steinbrenner visited the ballpark. The secret message was called ‘The Eagle has landed.’ Jeter says that upon his arrival, everyone stood straight and looked busy to avoid eye contact with him.
Jeter further talks of the discipline in the team due to the presence of Steinbrenner. He says, “If there’s a scrap of paper on the floor, employees would sooner chew it than let the Boss see it. If a player’s practice jersey is not tucked in, which I rarely see anyway, he tucks it in. Everything is neat, efficient, and professional, the staples of a winning organization.”
