From a young age, Derek Jeter learned to value his possessions. It was a lesson that was deeply ingrained in him. Jeter was not from a wealthy household and his parents taught him to value every dollar. So, at a young age, the New York Yankees legend once did his level best to make his parents’ $125 investment worth every penny. 

This level of commitment continued to his baseball career as he never mistreated his equipment. The legendary shortstop was mature from a young age and made sure to achieve what he promised. That led to him getting the most out of his parents’ $125 and building a $200 million net worth.

Even as a child, Derek Jeter dreamt of playing for the Yankees. Furthermore, he did his best to improve different abilities and skills. When he was young, Jeter asked for a pair of basketball shoes to improve his leaping ability. On pages 16 and 17 of his book, ‘Captain: The Journey of Derek Jeter’, sportswriter Ian O’Connor narrated the story. He shared that Jeter’s mother wanted him to be fully committed and make the most of the shoes. 

In the book, O’Connor wrote, “One day Derek announced he wanted a pair of $125 basketball shoes he thought would improve his modest (at the time) leaping ability. His mother agreed on one condition: Derek had better wear those shoes and work on his jumping 24/7. Sure enough, Derek would run and hop all over the family’s small living room. ‘He knew it was important for us,’ Dot would say, ‘that if we were going to sacrifice $125, then he was going to give us his all.’”

It was this and many other things that the legendary shortstop did to assure his success. Furthermore, Derek believes anyone can achieve as much success as him through a simple mantra. But they have to be committed to giving it their all.

From when Derek Jeter was young, his father would beat him at games and quizzes. The two would sit down together and watch ‘The Price is Right’. This taught the future Yankees superstar the value of everyday items and that winning isn’t easy. Furthermore, the legendary shortstop credits his family and upbringing for much of his success.
