After a brilliant season and an even better postseason, the Houston Astros are done for 2023. For the first time since 2011, the Texas Rangers are back in the World Series. But the sweetest part of this victory has perhaps been beating their AL West divisional rivals. Already disliked by many around the league, the Stros will not get a chance to defend their 2022 crown. Is it all courtesy of Dusty Baker?

The reigning Fall Classic champs have been brutally defeated and for some, it may be time to step away from their roles. 2023 has been a season of surprises, but one prediction may come true. A seasoned veteran of the sport, Baker may be throwing in the towel.

Not many have been in the game longer than Johnnie B. Baker Jr. A star with the LA Dodgers during his playing days, most fans today remember him for the blazing trail he has made as a skipper. From the Giants and the Cubs to the Reds, and the Nationals, Dusty Baker tempered his skills. But his baseball years may culminate in Houston, or at least his managerial career.

The Athletic reported that Baker has evidently told multiple people that 2023 was the last year he would manage the Astros. Or any MLB team, for that matter. The 74-year-old seemingly wants to get away from the daily grind of the role but still stay in baseball in some capacity. However, he likely won’t be doing it in the Bayou City.

Whatever ballpark he may have done it at, Baker has been a regular in October. He can credit 2x World Series (one with the Astros) out of 26 years as a skipper. The number of trophies may seem small, but 3x Manager of the Year awards belie his skills. Nevertheless, Baker is ready to pack it in.

The fact that his latest team failed to win a Game 7 in the postseason, again, may have factored into his decision. Despite Baker’s success, some fans are ready to say goodbye in anger. But why the hush-hush nature of this announcement? The reasons are manifold.

Baker May Change His Mind Just Yet

Per The Athletic, “Baker didn’t want the attention that would come with a farewell tour, several sources believe. In addition, Baker, who told The Athletic multiple times he was “thinking about” retirement, still has a chance to change his mind.” Having occupied a permanent position in the dugout since 1993, the skipper has given almost three decades to baseball. And that’s after retiring as a player.

Although Baker never gained entry to Cooperstown as a player, he is almost certain to do it as a manager. Houston may be bidding goodbye to him with bitter memories, but baseball remembers him, whether or not Baker returns to manage.
