The New York Mets are attached to a lot of names this offseason. From Yoshinobu Yamamoto to Blake Snell to even Shohei Ohtani, they seem to be going after everyone. After an awful 2023, the Amazin’ Mets are trying to rebuild a winning unit; but there’s a catch. The club might not be able to spend too much owing to pitchers like Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer playing elsewhere. So could trade be the way for them? Could Corbin Burnes be the answer?

There is a huge chance that the Mets might get Yamamoto in their fold. But getting only him won’t be enough as they need 2 new starting pitchers. This is where the Milwaukee Brewers’ ace comes into the picture – could he be a showstopper in Queens?

One of the main reasons for the Mets’ downfall last season was their underperforming bullpen. Due to multiple injuries and a lack of quality starters, they lost game after game due to ineffectual pitching. Though the 2023 market is filled with free agents, the Mets can only possibly sign a single pitcher.

Due to a massive payroll, the team probably wouldn’t want to spend too much on free agents. The only remaining viable option is of course trading. The Mets can go after the 2021 Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes, who has only one year left in his contract and the Brew Crew might not meet his salary demands, consequently looking to trade him.

He’d be a quality rotational starter for the Mets. Burnes is known for his cutters and had a 3.39 ERA with 10-8 score in 2023. Burnes could theoretically be a good addition, even if his latest performance dipped marginally. Although the Mets did make it clear to Max Scherzer once that they see 2024 as transitional, Burnes could still turn them into a winning squad. But what will it take to get him?

The Mets should brace themselves for some serious competition

The biggest problem in Flushing is that high-potential positional players may have to be traded for Burnes. The Mets’ bullpen doesn’t quite have the talent that could add up to Burnes, which could result in an overpay.

The other big problem is that teams like the LA Dodgers would also love to pounce on this opportunity and they have a better roster to use for a trade. Given that Corbin Burnes just turned 29 and will surely be at his prime in 2024, suitors will be lining up left and right for his signature.
