Injuries are a part and parcel of an athlete’s career, and baseball is no stranger to them. Rotator cuffs, UCLs, sprains, hamstrings, and concussions – the list is endless. Time and time again, fans witness their favorite athletes taking time off to recover. The Texas Rangers are stuck in a similar situation with Jacob deGrom.

Time away from their livelihood and the game they love the most has to be hard on the player. On the other hand, it also means losing a valuable player, directly impacting chances of team success. The 2023 season has been no different. There was as much debate about the ones playing as there was about the ones who missed out on all or a major part of the season. The likes of Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge, and Jacob deGrom, to name a few.

It was the first week of June 2023 when the initial news of deGrom’s injury came out. Soon after, the Texas Rangers announced that the 2x Cy Young award winner had suffered a UCL tear. A second Tommy John surgery on his right elbow was in order. Missing the entirety of the 2023 season and perhaps even the start of the initial phase of the 2024 season was a given. But with the Texas Rangers reaching the World Series and in contention for the championship, speculations are once again ripe.

Fans and experts are wondering if there is any chance the 35-year-old can return to the mound at this crucial juncture. But that’s not happening. deGrom, in the months after the surgery, has seen significant improvement and has a full range of motion.

As per Joel Sherman of the New York Post, deGrom is aiming to start throwing by the start of 2024 and get back on the mound by spring. “My arm feels pretty close to normal already,” said deGrom, as he plans to get back into action by August next year. But he’s not happy to be missing out right now. “It stinks,” he said simply. The pitcher’s team looks to other options meanwhile.

Rangers will hope not to miss deGrom

Moving to Texas just last season on a five-year, $185 million deal, Jacob deGrom was supposed to be one of the best. While his previous performance has lifted him to elite status, the unfortunate injury has ruined Texas’ plans for the 4x All-Star. Despite only being able to start six games this season, he finished 2-0 with an impressive ERA of 2.67.

While the progress deGrom will make is under scrutiny, one thing is certain: he will not be participating in this year’s World Series. The Rangers would certainly miss his talents, but with Jordan Montgomery, Nathan Eovaldi, and Max Scherzer in good shape, the Rangers would certainly hope to lift the title this year.
